North Conway with Kids

North Conway sits at the mouth of the Mount Washington Valley and is the most family-shaped base in the White Mountains, because the things children want and the things the mountains offer happen to be stacked within twenty minutes of each other: a small theme park pitched squarely at under-tens, a scenic railway leaving from the middle of the village, waterfalls reachable on a short flat walk, and the highest peak in the north-eastern United States a short drive up the valley. It is also a ski base in winter, with several small mountains close enough to change plans between. The trade-off is Route 16, the single road through town, which is lined with outlet shops and backs up badly on summer and autumn weekends — a two-mile stretch that can take half an hour. The second is that spring here, roughly April into mid-May, is mud season: the snow has gone, the trails are wet, and a noticeable share of the valley's businesses close or shorten hours until the summer season starts.

Why North Conway works with children

  • A theme park aimed at small children, not teenagers

Story Land in nearby Glen is built around gentle rides and storybook sets for roughly ages two to ten, which is an unusual thing to find beside a mountain range.

  • Two mountain railways and a road to a summit

A scenic railway runs from the village, a cog railway climbs Mount Washington from the western side, and the Auto Road climbs it from the east — three ways up that need no walking.

  • Short walks with real payoffs

Diana's Baths is a broad set of cascades reached on a flat gravel path of under a mile, which is a rare ratio of effort to reward with small children.

  • Two separate seasons, both worth coming for

A hiking and rail summer, and a ski winter across several small mountains close enough to swap between mid-trip.

Where to stay

Best areas in North Conway for families

4 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly first visits and railway-led trips versus ski trips and self-catering.
  • North Conway village

Best for first visits and railway-led trips

The old village centre around the station, walkable and compact, with places to eat within a few minutes. It is also the pinch point for Route 16 traffic, so an evening return from the north can be slow.

  • Glen and Jackson

Best for families doing story land and the auto road

A few miles north, beside the turn for Pinkham Notch. Quieter than the village, closer to both the theme park and Mount Washington, with river swimming holes and covered bridges in Jackson.

  • Intervale and the Route 16 corridor south

Best for value stays with a car

Motels, cabins and condominium rentals spread along the highway either side of the outlet strip. Rooms are cheaper and parking is free, but nothing is walkable and the road noise varies enormously between properties a hundred metres apart.

  • Bartlett and the Attitash corridor

Best for ski trips and self-catering

Condominium and townhouse rentals with kitchens near the slopes, which suits a week when the plan is skiing and the daily cost of eating out for four would otherwise dominate the budget.

Family hotel picks in North Conway

  • North Conway village — inns and small hotels near the station
    North Conway villageMid-range

North Conway village — inns and small hotels near the station

The only part of the valley where a family can leave the car and walk to dinner, the station and the shops, which makes the scenic railway an easy morning rather than a parking exercise.

    • Walking distance to the railway station and village restaurants
    • Pools at several of the larger properties
    • Breakfast included at most of the smaller inns
    • Short drive to Story Land, the notches and the ski hills

    Fitting a family in

Two-queen family rooms are standard; suites with a separate sleeping area exist at the larger properties and are the realistic option for five.

Watch out. The village sits on Route 16, which backs up badly on summer and autumn weekend afternoons — rooms facing the road are noisy and arriving between mid-afternoon and evening on a Saturday is slow. Older inns often have stairs, no lift and thin walls, and the autumn-colour weeks are priced at the top of the year.

  • The Route 16 corridor — motels and cabins with parking at the door
    Intervale / Route 16 southBudget

The Route 16 corridor — motels and cabins with parking at the door

The cheapest way to put a family in the valley with a car outside the door and a pool for the late afternoon, which is the shape most driving-led White Mountain trips actually take.

    • Free parking beside the room
    • Indoor or outdoor pools at many properties
    • Kitchenettes in the cabin and cottage units
    • Short drive to Story Land, Diana's Baths and the ski hills

    Fitting a family in

Two-bed motel rooms sleep four; the cabin and cottage units usually add a separate bedroom and a kitchen for five.

Watch out. Nothing is walkable and the properties sit directly on the valley's only through road, so traffic noise varies hugely between two motels a hundred metres apart — ask which side of the building the room is on. Standards along this strip are inconsistent, and several properties close or run reduced hours through mud season in April and early May.

  • Bartlett and Attitash — condominium rentals with kitchens near the slopes
    Bartlett / AttitashMid-range

Bartlett and Attitash — condominium rentals with kitchens near the slopes

A kitchen and separate bedrooms change the economics of a week with children, particularly a ski week where breakfast, packed lunches and drying kit matter more than a hotel lobby does.

    • Full kitchen and laundry
    • Separate bedrooms and a living area
    • Shared pool and hot tub at many developments
    • Minutes from the ski hills and the Crawford Notch road

    Fitting a family in

Two- and three-bedroom townhouses and condominium units sleep four to eight, and are the standard way families take a week here.

Watch out. These are individually owned units, so furnishing and upkeep vary widely within the same development and the photographs are of one specific apartment rather than a standard. Many are multi-level with stairs, cleaning fees are charged on top of the nightly rate, and minimum stays of several nights are normal in ski season and at colour peak. It is a drive to every restaurant.

Things to do in North Conway with kids

  • Story Land
    Theme parkBook ahead

    Story Land

    North Conway

A small theme park at Glen, a few miles north of North Conway, built around storybook sets and gentle rides aimed at roughly ages two to ten, with a water-play area, a log flume and a handful of slightly larger rides for the upper end of that range.

    Ages
    2–10
    Time
    6h
    Adult, from
    €45

Good to know. Several rides carry height minimums, commonly in the region of 90 to 110 cm, so a small toddler will be turned away from a meaningful share of what has been paid for — check the park's own height chart against the child before buying. The season is a summer and early-autumn one with reduced weekend operation at the edges, and the park closes for the winter. It holds very little for teenagers.

  • Conway Scenic Railroad
    AdventureBook ahead

    Conway Scenic Railroad

    North Conway

A heritage railway running from the restored station in the middle of North Conway village, with a short valley excursion and a considerably longer mountain route that climbs through Crawford Notch on a ledge above the valley floor.

    Ages
    2–16
    Time
    2h 30m
    Adult, from
    €40

Good to know. The two routes are very different propositions: the valley trip is about an hour and works with a restless toddler, while the Crawford Notch run is a several-hour round trip with no way off in the middle, which is a long time for a small child. Seating classes differ in comfort and price, and the popular autumn-colour departures sell out well ahead. Services are seasonal and reduced outside summer.

  • Mount Washington Auto Road
    Adventure

    Mount Washington Auto Road

    North Conway

A toll road from Pinkham Notch climbing about eight miles to the summit of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the north-eastern United States, with a weather observatory and a visitor building at the top. Guided van trips run for drivers who would rather not do it themselves.

    Ages
    4–16
    Time
    3h
    Adult, from
    €45

Good to know. The road is narrow, steep and largely unguarded, with drops beside the carriageway and no barrier on much of it — a meaningful number of drivers find it genuinely frightening, and the guided van exists for that reason. Brakes overheat on the descent and low gear is required. The summit has some of the most severe recorded weather anywhere and is routinely far colder, windier and cloudier than the valley, including in July; the road closes for weather without notice and for the winter entirely.

  • Diana's Baths
    Water

    Diana's Baths

    North Conway

A broad staircase of cascades and shallow pools on Lucy Brook, reached by a flat, wide gravel path of a little over half a mile from a car park on West Side Road. It is the shortest walk in the valley that ends at something genuinely worth seeing.

    Ages
    2–16
    Time
    1h 30m
    Adult, from
    €5

Good to know. The approach path is level and buggy-friendly but the rocks at the falls are wet, sloping and slippery, and children scramble on them constantly. Flow varies enormously with rainfall — spectacular after rain, and in a dry August reduced to trickles and paddling pools. The car park is small, charges a fee and fills by mid-morning on summer weekends, with no legal overflow parking on the road.

Getting around North Conway

This is a driving destination with no useful public transport, and the valley is arranged along one road, Route 16, that carries everything. The single most useful piece of local knowledge is that the outlet strip south of North Conway village jams on summer and autumn weekend afternoons; West Side Road runs roughly parallel and bypasses most of it, and locals use it as a matter of course. The Kancamagus Highway, Route 112, is the scenic crossing west towards Lincoln — around 35 miles with no fuel, no food and patchy mobile signal, so it is a drive to start with a full tank and a fed child. Winter adds the usual northern requirements: the valley roads are ploughed and maintained, but a hire car should be checked for winter tyres rather than assumed to have them, and mountain notch roads close in heavy weather.

North Conway tips for families

  • Getting around

Learn the back road before the first weekend afternoon

Route 16 through the outlet strip is the only through road and it congests badly on summer and autumn weekends. West Side Road, running parallel on the other side of the Saco, skips most of it and is the route to have in mind before sitting in the queue rather than after. It matters most on the return from the north at the end of an afternoon.

  • Packing

Treat Mount Washington's summit as a different climate

The summit is famous for severe weather and it is routinely far colder, windier and less visible than the valley below, including in July. Both the Auto Road and the cog railway can be held or turned back on the day for weather. Warm layers for everyone belong in the car whatever the forecast at the bottom says, and it is worth having an alternative plan for the day rather than a single booking.

  • When to go

Avoid April and early May unless the plan is indoors

The weeks between the end of skiing and the start of summer are mud season: trails are wet and often closed to protect them, the higher roads and notch passes have not reopened, and a significant share of restaurants and attractions in the valley close or run reduced hours. It is the cheapest time to come, and the reason is visible.

  • Getting around

The Kancamagus has no services at all

Route 112 west from Conway is one of the best drives in New England and has no fuel stations, no shops and no reliable phone coverage along its length. Fill up first, bring water and snacks, and plan the stops — the overlooks and the roadside falls are the point of the road, and a few of them involve a short scramble down to the water rather than a level path.

North Conway with kids: common questions

Is Story Land worth a full day with young children?
For roughly ages three to nine, yes — the rides are gentle, the sets are built to be walked into, and a family can usually cover it in one unhurried day. Several rides carry height minimums, so a child well under about 100 cm will be turned away from a meaningful share of them. It is a poor fit for teenagers.
What is the best way up Mount Washington with kids?
Either the Auto Road from Pinkham Notch on the eastern side or the cog railway from the Bretton Woods side, both of which reach the summit without walking. The Auto Road is a narrow, steep, unguarded climb that some drivers find uncomfortable, and a guided van option exists for exactly that reason. Both can be stopped on the day by weather.
How much driving does a stay here involve?
Not much day to day — most of the valley's attractions are inside twenty minutes. The exceptions are the western White Mountains, so Franconia Notch and the cog railway are closer to an hour each way, and the Kancamagus crossing is a half-day in itself.
Does North Conway work for a ski trip with children?
Yes, and the reason is the number of small mountains within short reach rather than the size of any one of them — it is easy to move to a different hill if conditions or a child's mood change. Rentals, lessons and childcare are standard. Budget-wise, self-catering condominiums near the slopes are usually the difference between a workable week and an expensive one.
When is the autumn colour here?
The northern White Mountains generally turn earlier than the coast, often from late September into the first half of October, with the valley floors a week or two behind the higher ground. The window is roughly three weeks and shifts year to year, so the honest plan is to pick dates inside it and accept the state of the trees on arrival.
