The UAE with Kids: Itineraries, Where to Stay & When to Go

The UAE is built for short, high-intensity family trips. Dubai and Abu Dhabi between them hold a concentration of theme parks, water parks, aquariums and indoor attractions that no other short-haul destination matches, almost all of them air-conditioned. Flights are short from Europe and the Middle East, the infrastructure is flawless, and English is used everywhere. The two constraints are cost — attraction tickets for a family add up fast — and heat, which dictates the shape of every day from May to September.

  • Short flight, no jet lag for most

A few hours from Europe and the Middle East, with a time difference of one to four hours.

  • Extremely low crime

Safe at any hour, with excellent public facilities and English used everywhere.

  • Warm sea in winter

Beach weather from November through April, when Europe has none.

When to visit the UAE with kids

November to March is the comfortable window, with daytime temperatures in the mid-twenties and warm sea. April and October are hot but manageable. May to September regularly exceeds 40°C, which restricts outdoor activity to early morning and evening, though hotel rates fall sharply.

Where to stay

Family hotels in the UAE

We list areas and property types rather than single hotels: family-room availability changes constantly, and the area plus the room requirement is what survives contact with a booking engine.
  • Dubai — JBR & Marina beach hotels
    Jumeirah Beach Residence / MarinaHigher-end

Dubai — JBR & Marina beach hotels

A beach and a walkable restaurant promenade directly outside the hotel is the one thing that reduces taxi use in a city where walking is otherwise impractical.

    • Direct beach access with lifeguards
    • Walkable promenade full of restaurants
    • Tram and metro connections along the corridor
    • Most properties have children's pools and clubs

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms and suites are common; many properties allow two children to stay free in the parents' room.

Watch out. Rates swing enormously by season. The same room can be half price in July and August.

  • Yas Island — hotels with park tickets
    Yas IslandMid-range

Yas Island — hotels with park tickets

Several Yas hotels bundle theme-park entry into the room rate, which for a family frequently costs less than buying tickets separately.

    • Park tickets included in many rates
    • Free shuttle between hotels and parks
    • Walking distance to the parks and the mall

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms are standard, and children often stay free in the parents' room.

Watch out. Yas Island is 30–40 minutes from central Abu Dhabi and has little beyond the parks and the mall.

  • Ras Al Khaimah — Al Marjan Island beach resorts
    Al Marjan IslandMid-range

Ras Al Khaimah — Al Marjan Island beach resorts

These are self-contained beach resorts on quiet sand at rates below the Dubai equivalent, which is the practical argument for the emirate given how little there is to walk to.

    • Direct beach access with calm, shallow water
    • Kids' clubs and shallow pools as standard
    • Several restaurants on-site, buffet included
    • Half-board and all-inclusive rates widely offered

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms and interconnecting doubles are standard, and two younger children frequently stay free in the parents' room.

Watch out. Nothing is within walking distance of the islands, so every meal off-site and every excursion is a car or a taxi. That is precisely why the board-inclusive rates are worth pricing.

Good to know. Sunset slots sell out weeks ahead and cost roughly double the daytime price.

    Adult, from
    €60

Good to know. Dune-bashing causes motion sickness in many children. Calmer camp-only and sunset options are widely available.

    Yas Island theme parks

    Abu Dhabi

    4–16
    Time
    9h
    Adult, from
    €85

Good to know. Multi-park tickets and hotel bundles usually cost less than separate entries for a family.

  • Jebel Jais mountain road & viewing decks
    Nature

Jebel Jais mountain road & viewing decks

    Ras Al Khaimah

A paved switchback road climbing the highest mountain in the UAE to a series of terraced viewing decks looking down into the wadi, with a restaurant and a camping area near the top.

    Ages
    3–16
    Time
    4h
    Adult, from
    Free

Good to know. Around an hour of winding mountain road each way, which is a real motion-sickness risk. There is almost no shade and few facilities beyond the upper viewpoints, and the summit is markedly cooler and windier than the coast.

  • Jebel Jais zipline
    AdventureBook ahead

    Jebel Jais zipline

    Ras Al Khaimah

A long zipline strung across the Jebel Jais wadi and ridden face-down in a harness, alongside a shorter multi-stage aerial tour on the same mountain.

    Ages
    12–17
    Time
    3h
    Adult, from
    €95

Good to know. The main line carries a minimum age of around twelve plus a weight range, which rules out most younger children — the shorter tour has lower limits. It closes in high wind, and slots are booked online before the drive up.

Getting around the UAE

Dubai's metro covers the main spine along Sheikh Zayed Road and reaches the Marina, downtown and the airport. Taxis and ride-hailing are plentiful and inexpensive by European standards. Abu Dhabi is 90 minutes from Dubai by road, with frequent intercity buses. A car is useful but rarely essential.

Do you need a rental car?

A little driving. The metro covers the main corridor and taxis are cheap and everywhere. A car is worth it if you are staying outside the centre or visiting several attractions a day in summer, when even a short walk between a taxi rank and an entrance is unpleasant.

Planning estimates based on published prices at the time of writing, in shoulder season. Peak months, school holidays and city-centre accommodation all push the figure higher.

Food in the UAE

Every cuisine is represented, and the mall food courts alone will feed even the fussiest child. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants. During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is restricted, which is worth planning around with children.

Practical tips for the UAE

The things that are easy to get wrong and expensive to fix once you have arrived.
  • Money & costs

Buy attraction tickets online in advance

Gate prices are the highest prices. Online tickets, multi-park passes and combination deals routinely cut 20–30% off a family's ticket spend.

  • When to go

Structure the day around the heat

From May to September, outdoors works before 10:00 and after 17:00. Everything in between should be indoor or in the water.

  • Culture & etiquette

    Check the Ramadan dates

Eating and drinking in public during daylight is restricted, some attractions run shorter hours, and the atmosphere changes. Hotels continue to serve guests as normal.

  • Staying connected

    Data makes taxis easier

Ride-hailing apps are the simplest way to move around, and they need a connection from the moment you land.

UAE with kids: common questions

Is Dubai good for kids?
Very, if the budget allows. The concentration of theme parks, water parks, aquariums and indoor attractions is unmatched for a short-haul trip, and almost all of it is air-conditioned. Ticket prices for a family are the main constraint.
When is the best time to visit the UAE with children?
November to March. Daytime temperatures sit in the mid-twenties and the sea is warm. Summer visits are viable for a purely indoor and pool-based trip at much lower hotel rates.
How many days do you need in Dubai with kids?
Five to seven. That covers two or three major attractions, a desert trip, beach and pool days, and one day in Abu Dhabi. Longer and the ticket costs mount without much new to see.
Is the UAE expensive for families?
Attractions are the expensive part — major parks cost more per head than European equivalents. Accommodation varies widely by season, and food is affordable if you use food courts and local restaurants rather than hotel dining.
