Dubai Family Break

About this trip

Dubai rewards a short, well-planned trip rather than a long one. Five days is enough for two major attractions, a desert evening, a day in Abu Dhabi and time at the beach, before the ticket prices start outweighing what is left to see. Every day here is built around the heat: outdoors early and late, indoors or in water in between.

Ages 4+5 daysModerate paceNo car neededHigher-end

Why the route is built this way

  • Five days is the length at which the ticket cost per new experience is still reasonable.
  • One beach base, no hotel changes, taxis and metro rather than a hire car.
  • The desert trip is scheduled in the evening, which is both cooler and better.
  • Abu Dhabi is a single long day rather than an overnight, unless theme parks are the point of the trip.

Who this trip is not for

Families on a tight budget. Attraction tickets for four are the dominant cost here, and there is no low-cost version of this itinerary.

Day-by-day: 5 days in UAE

A suggested plan, built around one main thing a day with the heavier days followed by lighter ones.
  1. Day 1 · Dubai

    Arrive and hit the beach

Transfer, check in, and the sea before sunset.

    Easy day
    • Airport to the Marina or JBR

30–40 minutes by taxi, or the metro along the main corridor.

    • The beach promenade

JBR and the Marina have a walkable strip of restaurants directly behind the sand — rare in a city where walking outdoors is otherwise impractical.

  2. Day 2 · Dubai

    Water park

A full day in the water.

    Full day

Good to know. Headline slides need roughly 110–120 cm. Check before buying if your youngest is close to the line.

  3. Day 3 · Dubai

    Downtown and the desert

Aquarium and the tower by day, dunes in the evening.

    Moderate

Good to know. Standard safaris include aggressive dune-bashing, which causes motion sickness in many children. Calmer camp-only options are widely available.

  4. Day 4 · Dubai

    Beach and pool

    Nothing scheduled.

    Easy day
    • A day at the hotel

After two heavy ticketed days this is the one that makes the trip feel like a holiday.

  5. Day 5 · Abu Dhabi

    Abu Dhabi day trip

The Grand Mosque and the Louvre, then home.

    Moderate

Good to know. If theme parks are the main purpose of your trip, stay on Yas Island for a night or two instead — the parks need more than a day.

Where to stay

Accommodation on this route

Areas and property types for each stop, with what to check before booking.
  • Dubai — JBR & Marina beach hotels
    Jumeirah Beach Residence / MarinaHigher-end

Dubai — JBR & Marina beach hotels

A beach and a walkable restaurant promenade directly outside the hotel is the one thing that reduces taxi use in a city where walking is otherwise impractical.

    • Direct beach access with lifeguards
    • Walkable promenade full of restaurants
    • Tram and metro connections along the corridor
    • Most properties have children's pools and clubs

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms and suites are common; many properties allow two children to stay free in the parents' room.

Watch out. Rates swing enormously by season. The same room can be half price in July and August.

  • Dubai — Downtown apartment hotels
    Downtown / Business BayMid-range

    Dubai — Downtown apartment hotels

Apartment hotels give a kitchen and separate bedrooms at less than two hotel rooms, within walking distance of the mall, the aquarium and the fountains.

    • Kitchen and laundry for a longer stay
    • Walk to the Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa
    • Metro station on the same block

    Fitting a family in

Two-bedroom apartments are widely available and usually cheaper than two beach-hotel rooms.

Watch out. No beach. Expect a 20–30 minute taxi ride each time you want the sea.

  • Yas Island — hotels with park tickets
    Yas IslandMid-range

Yas Island — hotels with park tickets

Several Yas hotels bundle theme-park entry into the room rate, which for a family frequently costs less than buying tickets separately.

    • Park tickets included in many rates
    • Free shuttle between hotels and parks
    • Walking distance to the parks and the mall

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms are standard, and children often stay free in the parents' room.

Watch out. Yas Island is 30–40 minutes from central Abu Dhabi and has little beyond the parks and the mall.

Practical information

The decisions that are easy to get wrong and expensive to fix once you have arrived.
  • Money & costs

Never buy tickets at the gate

Online prices, multi-park passes and combination deals routinely cut 20–30% off a family's ticket spend. Passes only pay off if you use most of what they cover.

  • When to go

Build every day around the heat

Even in winter, midday sun is strong. From May to September, outdoors works before 10:00 and after 17:00 and nothing in between.

  • Culture & etiquette

Check the Ramadan dates before booking

Eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is restricted and some attractions run shorter hours. Hotels continue to serve guests as normal.

Common questions

How many days do you need in Dubai with kids?
Five to seven. That covers two or three major attractions, a desert trip, beach days and one day in Abu Dhabi. Beyond that the ticket costs mount without much new to see.
Is Dubai expensive for families?
The attractions are. Major parks cost more per head than European equivalents, and for a family of four that is usually the largest single line after flights. Accommodation varies enormously by season.
What is the best time to visit Dubai with children?
November to March, when daytime temperatures sit in the mid-twenties and the sea is warm. Summer works only for an indoor and pool-based trip, at much lower hotel rates.
