About this trip

Three bases in ten days, ordered so the trip gets easier as it goes: two days of city while everyone is still fresh, three in the cooler north for the elephant sanctuaries, then five on a beach doing nothing. Internal flights keep the transfers to about ninety minutes each, which is what makes three stops possible in ten days without the trip becoming a series of airports.

Ages 5+10 daysModerate paceNo car neededBudget

Why the route is built this way

  • The order matters: city first, beach last. Nobody wants Bangkok after five days on the sand.
  • Internal flights rather than trains or buses — 90 minutes instead of 12 hours.
  • Chiang Mai is cooler and greener than the rest of the country, which makes the middle of the trip the easiest part.
  • Five nights at the beach at the end, with nothing scheduled.
  • No driving at any point; pre-booked transfers cover every leg.

Who this trip is not for

Families with children under about four, or anyone with under ten days. Two internal flights inside a shorter trip means most of it is spent moving.

Day-by-day: 10 days in Thailand

A suggested plan, built around one main thing a day with the heavier days followed by lighter ones.
  1. Day 1 · Bangkok

    Arrive in Bangkok

Transfer, pool, an early dinner nearby.

    Easy day
    • Airport transfer

Pre-book a private van. It costs little more than metered taxis and removes the fare negotiation on arrival.

    • Hotel pool

A pool is not a luxury in Bangkok; it is the plan for every afternoon.

  2. Day 2 · Bangkok

    Temples and the river

    Sights before 11:00, air-conditioning after.

    Moderate

Good to know. Heat and humidity build through the day. Temples in the morning, indoors in the afternoon, markets in the evening.

  3. Day 3 · Chiang Mai

    Fly north

Short flight, then the old town in the evening.

    Easy day
    • Bangkok to Chiang Mai

About 75 minutes, with frequent daily departures.

    • Old town walk

Inside the moated square: temples, cafés and a night market, all on foot.

  4. Day 5 · Chiang Mai

    Doi Suthep and a waterfall

A mountain temple in the morning, water in the afternoon.

    Moderate
    • Doi Suthep

A gold-spired temple above the city, reached by a 300-step staircase or a funicular.

    • A jungle waterfall

Several within an hour of the city, with shallow pools for swimming.

  5. Day 6 · Phuket

    Fly south to the beach

Two hours, then nothing at all.

    Easy day
    • Chiang Mai to Phuket

Around two hours direct. Arrange the hotel transfer in advance — the airport is an hour from the west-coast beaches.

  6. Day 7 · Phuket

    Beach day

    Nothing scheduled.

    Easy day
    • Kata or Karon beach

Long sandy west-coast beaches with gentle entry in the dry season.

Good to know. Obey the beach flags. Rip currents on this coast are genuinely dangerous and red flags mean no swimming.

  7. Day 8 · Phuket

    Phang Nga Bay

A full day on the water among limestone karsts.

    Full day

Good to know. Choose a larger boat over a speedboat with young children — far more comfortable over a full day.

  8. Day 9 · Phuket

    Beach day

    Nothing scheduled.

    Easy day
    • Pool and beach

The last full day is deliberately empty.

  9. Day 10 · Phuket

    Home

    Transfer and fly.

    Easy day
    • Phuket airport

About an hour from the west-coast beaches. Pre-book the transfer.

Bangkok — Skytrain hotels with a pool

A pool is not a luxury in Bangkok; it is the afternoon plan. Being on the Skytrain removes the traffic from every other part of the day.

    • Rooftop or garden pool for the hot afternoon
    • Walking distance to a BTS or MRT station
    • Family rooms at mid-range prices

    Fitting a family in

Rooms sleeping four are widely available and inexpensive compared with European cities.

Watch out. Check the walk to the station in metres, not blocks. Bangkok pavements are hard going in the heat.

  • Chiang Mai — pool hotels near the old town
    Old Town / RiversideBudget

Chiang Mai — pool hotels near the old town

Chiang Mai is the best value in the country, and a pool hotel a few minutes from the walled old town gives both walkable sightseeing and a place to cool off.

    • Walking distance to the old town and night markets
    • Pool for the middle of the day
    • Sanctuary tours pick up from the hotel

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms and two-bedroom villas are inexpensive by comparison with the islands.

Watch out. Air quality is poor during the burning season, roughly late February to April. Hotel filtration matters then.

  • Phuket — west coast family resorts
    Kata / Karon / Bang TaoMid-range

Phuket — west coast family resorts

The value gap is the point: pools, kids' clubs and family suites at rates that would buy a standard European double room.

    • Shallow children's pools and often a slide
    • Kids' club included in the rate
    • Family suites and interconnecting rooms
    • Airport transfers arranged by the hotel

    Fitting a family in

Family suites with a separate children's room are common and cost far less than two rooms in Europe.

Watch out. Check how far the beach actually is — 'beachfront' sometimes means across a main road, which matters with young children.

Practical information

The decisions that are easy to get wrong and expensive to fix once you have arrived.
  • With kids

Book the sanctuary before anything else

Reputable no-riding sanctuaries cap daily numbers and fill weeks in advance. They also determine which day in Chiang Mai is fixed.

  • Getting around

    Pre-book every transfer

A private van for a family costs little more than taxis and removes fare negotiation at exactly the moments when everyone is tired.

  • Staying connected

    Data makes ride-hailing possible

Ride-hailing apps are cheaper and less stressful than street taxis, and they need a connection from the moment you land.

  • Health & safety

    Plan around the midday sun

UV is high year-round. Pool or beach mornings, shaded afternoons, outings again after 16:00 is the pattern that works.

Common questions

Is 10 days enough for Thailand with kids?
For three stops, yes, provided you fly between them. It is the shortest length at which Bangkok, the north and a beach all fit without the trip becoming a series of transfers.
What age is Thailand suitable for?
From about four or five, when children can manage the flight, the heat and the walking. Younger children do fine on a single-resort beach trip.
Is Phuket or Krabi better for families?
Phuket has more resorts, more direct flights and more to do off the beach, which makes it the easier choice on a first trip. Krabi is quieter and more scenic.
Are elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai ethical?
Some are. Look for no riding, no performances, no bullhooks, capped daily numbers and transparency about where the animals came from. Riding camps still operate and use similar marketing language.
