Bangkok with Kids

Bangkok works best as a two or three day bookend rather than a base. The heat and traffic are hard on children, but the Skytrain and river boats make the key sights reachable without sitting in a taxi, and the malls are genuinely useful: air-conditioned, with aquariums, ice rinks and food courts that solve both lunch and the afternoon heat.

Why Bangkok works with children

  • Skytrain and river boats beat the traffic

The BTS and the Chao Phraya express boats avoid the gridlock entirely.

  • Temples that impress immediately

The Grand Palace and the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho work on scale alone.

  • Malls as heat shelters

Aquariums, ice rinks and food courts inside air-conditioned complexes.

  • Hotel quality well above the price

Pool hotels with family rooms at mid-range European prices.

Where to stay

Best areas in Bangkok for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly most families versus short stays.
  • Sukhumvit (Asok / Phrom Phong)

    Best for most families

On the Skytrain, with malls, parks and the widest choice of family rooms.

  • Riverside

    Best for sightseeing and calm

Hotel boats connect to the express piers; quieter, greener and closer to the old city.

  • Siam

    Best for short stays

Central interchange for the Skytrain, surrounded by the largest malls.

Bangkok — Skytrain hotels with a pool

A pool is not a luxury in Bangkok; it is the afternoon plan. Being on the Skytrain removes the traffic from every other part of the day.

    • Rooftop or garden pool for the hot afternoon
    • Walking distance to a BTS or MRT station
    • Family rooms at mid-range prices

    Fitting a family in

Rooms sleeping four are widely available and inexpensive compared with European cities.

Watch out. Check the walk to the station in metres, not blocks. Bangkok pavements are hard going in the heat.

Getting around Bangkok

Use the BTS Skytrain, the MRT metro and the river express boats wherever possible; road traffic is unpredictable. Ride-hailing apps are cheap, metered and remove fare negotiation. Tuk-tuks are an experience rather than transport.

Bangkok tips for families

  • Culture & etiquette

    Temples have a dress code

Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, children included. The Grand Palace enforces this strictly and hires out cover-ups at the gate.

  • When to go

    Do the sights before 11:00

Heat and humidity build through the day. Temples in the morning, an air-conditioned afternoon, markets or the river in the evening is the pattern that works.

Bangkok with kids: common questions

How many days in Bangkok with kids?
Two or three. That covers the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, a river trip, one mall or aquarium day and a market. Longer and the heat and traffic start to outweigh what is left to see.
Is Bangkok too hot for children?
In April and May, close to it. From November to February it is manageable if you sightsee in the morning and stay air-conditioned or by the pool in the afternoon.
