Krabi with Kids

Krabi is the mainland counterpart to Phuket: the same Andaman sea and the same limestone scenery, with fewer large resorts and a slower pace. Ao Nang is the practical base — one walkable beach road with restaurants, pharmacies, a supermarket and the pier for longtail boats to Railay and the offshore islands. The scenery is the reason to come and the boats are how families reach it, which is also the catch: the coast here has a large tidal range, so several beaches are wide flats rather than swimming beaches for a few hours around low water, and longtail crossings become uncomfortable or are cancelled outright when there is swell.

Why Krabi works with children

  • Cliffs that rise straight out of the sea

Karst towers stand directly behind the sand at Railay and Phra Nang, close enough to hold a child's attention from a beach towel.

  • Sheltered bays in the dry season

Phra Nang and the northern beaches stay calm with gentle entry from November to April.

  • Boats instead of roads

Railay has no road access at all; the ten-minute longtail from Ao Nang is the only way in, and most children count it as the day's attraction.

  • Quieter and cheaper than Phuket

Shorter distances, fewer crowds and lower room rates for the same stretch of Andaman coast.

Where to stay

Best areas in Krabi for families

4 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly most families versus budget and local life.
  • Ao Nang

    Best for most families

One beach road with restaurants, pharmacies, a supermarket and the pier every boat trip leaves from — nothing needs a taxi.

  • Railay & Tonsai

    Best for scenery over convenience

Reachable only by boat, with dramatic cliffs and a handful of resorts. Nothing arrives or leaves after dark, and supplies are limited.

  • Klong Muang & Tubkaak

    Best for quiet resort stays

A calmer stretch about twenty minutes north, with larger resorts, shaded grounds and almost nothing to walk to.

  • Krabi Town

Best for budget and local life

Inland on the river, with a night market and the cheapest rooms in the province, but a drive from any beach.

Family hotel picks in Krabi

  • Krabi — Ao Nang hotels with a pool
    Ao NangMid-range

Krabi — Ao Nang hotels with a pool

Everything a family needs in Krabi sits on one street — boats, food, pharmacies and a supermarket — so a pool hotel set back from the beach road removes taxis from the trip almost entirely.

    • Pool for the hot middle of the day
    • Walking distance to the beach road and the boat pier
    • Tour desks and airport transfers arranged at reception
    • Restaurants at every price level within a few minutes

    Fitting a family in

Rooms sleeping three or four are standard. Interconnecting rooms are less common than on Phuket, so a family of five should confirm the configuration before booking.

Watch out. Ao Nang's own beach empties to flats at low tide and the longtail pier occupies one end of it. A sea-view room here is not the same thing as a swimming beach.

  • Krabi — quiet beach resorts at Klong Muang & Tubkaak
    Klong Muang / TubkaakHigher-end

Krabi — quiet beach resorts at Klong Muang & Tubkaak

A calm, gently shelving stretch of coast with resort grounds big enough for children to roam, twenty minutes clear of the Ao Nang crowds.

    • Direct beach access with gentle entry
    • Kids' clubs and shallow pools at the larger resorts
    • Shaded grounds set away from any road
    • Private boat trips arranged from the beach

    Fitting a family in

Family suites and two-bedroom villas are the norm along this stretch rather than the exception.

Watch out. There is almost nothing outside the gates. Every meal off-site, every pharmacy run and every trip into Ao Nang is a taxi, which adds up quickly over a week.

    Railay & Phra Nang beaches

    Krabi

A cliff-backed peninsula with no road access, reached by longtail boat from Ao Nang. Phra Nang beach sits beneath a limestone overhang beside a cave shrine.

Good to know. Boats load and unload in the water, so expect a shin-deep wade with bags and no pier. Shade is limited once the tide pushes people up the sand, and the macaques will open an unattended bag.

  • Four Islands boat trip

    Four Islands boat trip

    Krabi

A half-day circuit of Chicken Island, Tup, Poda and the Phra Nang cave, with snorkelling stops and a sandbar that links two islands at low tide.

    Adult, from
    €25

Good to know. Longtail versions are open, loud and wet in any swell; speedboats are faster but slam harder in chop, which is worse for motion-sick children. Trips are routinely cancelled in the monsoon months.

  • Emerald Pool & hot spring waterfall
    Nature

Emerald Pool & hot spring waterfall

    Krabi

A clear green forest pool in the Khao Phra Bang Khram reserve and a set of warm mineral pools nearby, usually combined into one inland half-day.

Good to know. About an hour inland each way. The forest path and the rock around both pools are slippery after rain, and tour groups fill the site in the middle of the day.

Getting around Krabi

Songthaew shared trucks run the Ao Nang to Krabi Town route for a fixed fare, and taxis quote a set price rather than using a meter — agree it before getting in. Boats are the real transport: longtails leave Ao Nang beach for Railay throughout the day and are sold per person, while island trips and the Phi Phi ferries leave from the piers. A hire car only earns its cost for families basing themselves at Klong Muang or planning several inland days; from Ao Nang it mostly sits parked.

Krabi tips for families

  • When to go

Check the tide before planning a beach morning

The tidal range here is large. Ao Nang and Nopparat Thara retreat a long way at low water and are not swimmable for a few hours either side of it, while Phra Nang holds water longer. Tide tables are posted at most hotels and are worth reading the night before.

  • Getting around

    Longtail boats mean wet boardings

Most beaches have no pier, so boarding and landing involve a shin-deep wade with bags. Pack a dry bag, put children in footwear that can get wet, and treat any swell as a reason to take a larger boat or postpone.

  • Health & safety

Shade is scarce on the best beaches

Railay and Phra Nang have very little natural shade once the tide pushes people up the sand. Long-sleeved swim tops do more than repeated sunscreen with children in and out of the water all day.

  • With kids

    Macaques take food, and bags

The monkeys at Phra Nang and around the Railay cliffs are used to visitors and will open an unattended bag. Keep food out of sight and do not let children feed or approach them.

Krabi with kids: common questions

How many days in Krabi with kids?
Four to six. That covers a Railay day, one island boat trip, an inland half-day and two or three days that are nothing but beach and pool. Longer works if it is a single-base beach holiday rather than a sightseeing stop.
Is Krabi or Phuket better for families?
Phuket has more family resorts, an international airport and far more to do when the beach is not an option. Krabi is quieter, cheaper and more scenic, with easier access to the limestone islands. Families who want one beach base with boat trips usually prefer Krabi; families who want a wet-weather plan usually prefer Phuket.
Can you stay on Railay with children?
Yes, but understand what it involves. There is no road, so every arrival and departure is a longtail boat with luggage, and once the boats stop for the evening there is no way off the peninsula. It suits older children and families staying several nights more than a one-night stop.
Are Krabi's beaches swimmable all day?
Not all of them. The tidal range leaves Ao Nang and Nopparat Thara as broad flats around low water. Phra Nang, Tubkaak and the resort beaches north of Ao Nang hold water for longer, which is worth factoring into where you stay.
When is the sea calm in Krabi?
November to April. The Andaman monsoon runs roughly May to October, when island trips are frequently cancelled and the crossings that do run are rough.
