Chiang Mai with Kids

Chiang Mai is the northern counterweight to a beach trip: cooler, greener, smaller and much easier to move around than Bangkok. For families the main draw is the ethical elephant sanctuaries in the surrounding hills, alongside jungle waterfalls, a compact walled old town and some of the best night markets in the country.

Why Chiang Mai works with children

  • Ethical elephant sanctuaries

No-riding sanctuaries within an hour's drive, built around feeding and observation.

  • Noticeably cooler than the south

Altitude and a northern latitude make the dry season genuinely comfortable.

  • A walkable old town

A compact moated square with temples, cafés and markets on foot.

  • The best value in the country

Accommodation and food cost less than the islands or Bangkok.

Where to stay

Best areas in Chiang Mai for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly walking and markets versus resort-style stays.
  • Old Town

    Best for walking and markets

Inside the moat, with temples, the Sunday walking street and plenty of small hotels.

  • Nimmanhaemin

Best for cafés and modern comforts

The contemporary district, with air-conditioned malls and a wide choice of restaurants.

  • Riverside

    Best for resort-style stays

Greener and quieter, with pool hotels a short drive from the old town.

Chiang Mai — pool hotels near the old town

Chiang Mai is the best value in the country, and a pool hotel a few minutes from the walled old town gives both walkable sightseeing and a place to cool off.

    • Walking distance to the old town and night markets
    • Pool for the middle of the day
    • Sanctuary tours pick up from the hotel

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms and two-bedroom villas are inexpensive by comparison with the islands.

Watch out. Air quality is poor during the burning season, roughly late February to April. Hotel filtration matters then.

The old town is walkable. Red songthaew shared trucks and ride-hailing apps cover the rest cheaply. Sanctuaries and waterfalls include transport in the tour price.

Chiang Mai tips for families

  • When to go

    Avoid the burning season

Agricultural burning from roughly late February to April produces severe air pollution across the north. It is the single strongest reason to time a Chiang Mai visit for November to January.

  • With kids

    Book sanctuaries well ahead

The reputable no-riding sanctuaries cap daily numbers and fill weeks in advance in high season.

Chiang Mai with kids: common questions

Are elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai ethical?
Some are. Look for no riding, no performances, no bullhooks, limited daily visitor numbers and transparency about where the animals came from. Riding camps still operate and market themselves with similar language.
How many days in Chiang Mai with kids?
Three. One for a sanctuary, one for the old town and markets, one for a waterfall or the mountain temple. A fourth adds a cooking class or a jungle day.
