Phuket with Kids

Phuket is the most practical island base in Thailand for families: an international airport, the broadest range of family resorts in the country, and calm west-coast bays in the dry season. It is also large and varied, so the beach you choose matters more than the island — the northern and central beaches are family-oriented, while Patong is the nightlife centre and rarely the right choice with children.

Why Phuket works with children

  • Calm bays in the dry season

Kata, Karon and the northern beaches have gentle water from November to April.

  • Resorts built for families

Kids' clubs, shallow pools and family suites are standard rather than premium.

  • Direct flights and a real airport

No boat transfer needed to arrive, unlike most Thai islands.

  • Island day trips from the pier

Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi islands are half or full-day trips.

Where to stay

Best areas in Phuket for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly most families versus rarely, with children.
  • Kata & Karon

    Best for most families

Long sandy beaches with gentle entry, plenty of restaurants and a calmer atmosphere than Patong.

  • Bang Tao & Layan (north-west)

    Best for resort stays

Larger, quieter resorts on a long beach, closer to the airport and further from the crowds.

  • Patong

    Best for rarely, with children

The nightlife centre — busy, loud and not the right base for a family week.

Family hotel picks in Phuket

Phuket — west coast family resorts

The value gap is the point: pools, kids' clubs and family suites at rates that would buy a standard European double room.

    • Shallow children's pools and often a slide
    • Kids' club included in the rate
    • Family suites and interconnecting rooms
    • Airport transfers arranged by the hotel

    Fitting a family in

Family suites with a separate children's room are common and cost far less than two rooms in Europe.

Watch out. Check how far the beach actually is — 'beachfront' sometimes means across a main road, which matters with young children.

Good to know. Rip currents are a genuine danger in the monsoon months. Red flags mean do not swim.

Getting around Phuket

Distances are longer than they look and public transport is limited. Use ride-hailing apps or arrange transfers through the hotel. Renting a car or scooter is not recommended with children given the road conditions.

Phuket tips for families

  • Health & safety

    Obey the beach flags

Rip currents on the west coast are genuinely dangerous in the monsoon months and cause fatalities each year. Red flags mean no swimming, not fewer swimmers.

  • With kids

Choose the larger boat for island trips

Speedboat day trips are fast but rough and noisy. Larger ferries are slower and far more comfortable with young children.
