Ras Al Khaimah with Kids

Ras Al Khaimah is the northern emirate, about an hour up the coast from Dubai, and it trades density for space: long quiet beaches, a mountain range directly behind them, and the highest peak in the country with a zipline strung across its wadi. Resort rates sit below the Dubai equivalent and the sand is genuinely empty by comparison, which is the whole argument for coming here. The trade-off is what is absent — no theme parks, very few indoor attractions and almost nothing to walk to outside the resort gates — and that matters most from roughly June to September, when outdoor activity is impossible for most of the day and the hotel pool becomes the entire plan.

Why Ras Al Khaimah works with children

  • Beaches with room on them

Wide, calm stretches of sand holding a fraction of the people on the Dubai coast, with warm water through the winter.

  • Mountains an hour inland

Jebel Jais rises to the highest point in the UAE and runs several degrees cooler than the coast.

  • Resort rates below Dubai's

Comparable beach resorts cost noticeably less, and half-board packages are common rather than an upsell.

  • An hour from Dubai's airport

Close enough to arrive on a Dubai flight, and to take a day back into the city when the quiet wears thin.

Where to stay

Best areas in Ras Al Khaimah for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly beach resort stays versus day trips rather than a base.
  • Al Marjan Island

    Best for beach resort stays

A chain of reclaimed islands holding most of the emirate's large beach resorts, with everything — food, pools, kids' clubs — on-site.

  • Al Hamra

Best for longer stays and self-catering

Apartments and villas around a marina, a golf course and a mall, cheaper over a week than resort rooms and with somewhere to go in the evening.

  • Jebel Jais & the mountains

Best for day trips rather than a base

A paved mountain road with viewing decks, the zipline and a camping area. An hour from the coast, with very few services on the way up.

Family hotel picks in Ras Al Khaimah

  • Ras Al Khaimah — Al Marjan Island beach resorts
    Al Marjan IslandMid-range

Ras Al Khaimah — Al Marjan Island beach resorts

These are self-contained beach resorts on quiet sand at rates below the Dubai equivalent, which is the practical argument for the emirate given how little there is to walk to.

    • Direct beach access with calm, shallow water
    • Kids' clubs and shallow pools as standard
    • Several restaurants on-site, buffet included
    • Half-board and all-inclusive rates widely offered

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms and interconnecting doubles are standard, and two younger children frequently stay free in the parents' room.

Watch out. Nothing is within walking distance of the islands, so every meal off-site and every excursion is a car or a taxi. That is precisely why the board-inclusive rates are worth pricing.

  • Ras Al Khaimah — Al Hamra apartments & villas
    Al HamraMid-range

Ras Al Khaimah — Al Hamra apartments & villas

A kitchen, a washing machine and separate bedrooms cost less across a week than two resort rooms, and the marina and mall give somewhere to spend an evening that is not the hotel lobby.

    • Two and three-bedroom apartments and villas
    • Kitchen and laundry for a longer stay
    • Shared pools, with a mall and marina a short drive away
    • Beach club access included at some developments

    Fitting a family in

Two and three-bedroom units are the normal stock here, so a family of five or six fits into a single booking.

Watch out. Most units are not on the beach — check whether beach club access is included or charged, and expect to drive to it. The area is quiet to the point of empty in summer, when some outlets close.

    Ras Al Khaimah

A paved switchback road climbing the highest mountain in the UAE to a series of terraced viewing decks looking down into the wadi, with a restaurant and a camping area near the top.

Good to know. Around an hour of winding mountain road each way, which is a real motion-sickness risk. There is almost no shade and few facilities beyond the upper viewpoints, and the summit is markedly cooler and windier than the coast.

  • Jebel Jais zipline

    Jebel Jais zipline

    Ras Al Khaimah

A long zipline strung across the Jebel Jais wadi and ridden face-down in a harness, alongside a shorter multi-stage aerial tour on the same mountain.

Good to know. The main line carries a minimum age of around twelve plus a weight range, which rules out most younger children — the shorter tour has lower limits. It closes in high wind, and slots are booked online before the drive up.

    Al Marjan Island beaches

Wide, shallow, largely resort-run beaches along a chain of reclaimed islands, with calm Gulf water and watersports desks on the sand.

Good to know. There is no natural shade at all, and by mid-summer the sea is warm enough that it stops cooling anyone down. Public access outside the resort stretches is limited, so the beach is effectively whichever one the hotel owns.

Getting around Ras Al Khaimah

Almost everything here is a drive. There is no metro, taxis are far thinner on the ground than in Dubai, and the mountain road up Jebel Jais has no public transport at all — so a hire car is usually the difference between doing things and staying at the hotel. Picking the car up at Dubai airport on arrival is normally cheaper than renting locally. The drive up from Dubai takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, and the coastal resorts are a further 20 minutes north of the city centre.

Ras Al Khaimah tips for families

  • When to go

Summer here is not a trade-off, it is a wall

From roughly June to September daytime temperatures pass 40°C with high coastal humidity, and the sea is too warm to cool anyone down. Rates fall sharply, but with no theme parks and few indoor attractions there is very little to fill a day beyond the pool.

  • Getting around

Hire a car, or plan to stay put

Taxis are scarce away from the resorts and a return fare to Jebel Jais is substantial. A car collected at Dubai airport covers the transfer and the mountain days in one cost.

  • With kids

Check the zipline limits before promising it

The main line carries minimum age and weight requirements that rule out younger children. Build the day around the mountain road and the viewing decks, and treat the ride as a bonus for whoever qualifies.

  • Packing

The mountain is much cooler than the beach

Jebel Jais can run roughly ten degrees below the coast and is exposed and windy at the top. A layer per child is worth packing even for a winter trip.

Ras Al Khaimah with kids: common questions

Is Ras Al Khaimah worth it with kids, or is Dubai better?
It depends on what the trip is for. Ras Al Khaimah gives quiet beaches, mountains and lower resort rates; Dubai gives theme parks, water parks and aquariums. Families wanting a beach week with one or two outings are better served here, and many combine the two by splitting the stay.
How far is Ras Al Khaimah from Dubai?
Roughly 60 to 90 minutes by road from Dubai airport, depending on traffic. That makes a day trip back into Dubai practical, and it also means arriving on a standard Dubai flight is straightforward.
Can young children do the Jebel Jais zipline?
Generally not. The main line has minimum age and weight requirements that exclude younger children, and it closes in high wind. The mountain road, the viewing decks and the shorter aerial tour are the alternatives for the rest of the family.
Is there anything to do in Ras Al Khaimah in summer?
Very little outdoors. Between June and September, outdoor activity works only early and late in the day, and unlike Dubai there is no significant indoor attraction network to retreat into. The emirate is a winter destination for families.
Do you need a car in Ras Al Khaimah?
In practice, yes, unless the plan is to stay inside one resort for the whole trip. Taxis are limited, distances are long and the mountains have no public transport.
