Mississippi

Biloxi with Kids

Biloxi sits on a low peninsula on the Mississippi Sound, behind a line of barrier islands about twenty kilometres offshore, and that geography explains nearly everything about it. The mainland beach is a ribbon of imported sand running for miles along the coastal highway, and the water in front of it is shallow, very warm and usually brown rather than blue — a toddler can wade a long way out, and a family expecting Caribbean clarity will be disappointed. The clear water and the white sand are on the islands, reached by a ferry crossing of about an hour from Gulfport, which makes a beach day a committed outing rather than a stroll. The other thing to settle before booking is the casinos: they are the largest buildings on the waterfront, they own much of the seafront, and they are not a family attraction — under-21s cannot be on the gaming floors, and smoking is still permitted on most of them.

Why Biloxi works with children

  • Miles of shallow, bath-warm water

The Sound is sheltered by the barrier islands, so the mainland shore has almost no surf and stays waist-deep a long way out — excellent with small children, dull for swimmers.

  • A ferry to genuinely clear water

West Ship Island, part of a national seashore, has white sand, open Gulf water and a brick fort, roughly an hour offshore from Gulfport harbour.

  • A working fishing fleet, not a heritage display

The shrimp and oyster industry here is current, and a short trawling trip from the small craft harbour pulls up what is on the menus that evening.

  • Cheaper than the resort coasts at the same latitude

Rooms, meals and beach parking all cost noticeably less than the Florida panhandle, which is a large part of why families come.

  • Swimmable water well beyond the school holidays

The Sound is shallow enough to heat quickly and to hold it, so the water stays warm from late spring into late autumn.

Where to stay

Best areas in Biloxi for families

4 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly staying within sight of the sand versus families building the trip around the island ferry.
  • Biloxi beachfront

Best for staying within sight of the sand

A continuous strip of hotels, condos and casino towers facing the beach across a four-lane coastal highway. The sand is public the whole way and rarely crowded, but the road between the room and the water is a genuine crossing rather than a stroll.

  • Point Cadet & the small craft harbour

Best for boat trips and the seafood museum

The eastern tip of the peninsula, where the shrimping trips, the maritime museum and several of the larger casino resorts sit together. Walkable within itself, and a drive to anywhere else.

  • Ocean Springs

Best for a quieter base with a real town centre

Across the bay bridge to the east: a small town with a walkable main street, independent restaurants, an art museum and an entirely different evening from the seafront strip. There is no swimming beach to speak of, so the beach becomes a drive.

  • Gulfport

Best for families building the trip around the island ferry

Twenty minutes west, with the Ship Island ferry harbour, an aquarium and cheaper rooms a street back from the water. The town is spread out and needs a car for everything.

Family hotel picks in Biloxi

  • Beachfront hotel or condo on the Biloxi seafront
    Biloxi beachfrontMid-range

Beachfront hotel or condo on the Biloxi seafront

A kitchen and a separate bedroom facing the water, without a gaming floor between the lift and the pool — which for a family is the main thing separating one seafront tower here from another.

    • Kitchen or kitchenette in most condo units
    • Pool on site, with the public beach opposite
    • Free parking, which is standard along this coast
    • Supermarkets and casual restaurants within a short drive

    Fitting a family in

One- and two-bedroom condos sleep four to six; hotel rooms with two queen beds take four without a rollaway.

Watch out. The four-lane coastal highway runs between every one of these buildings and the sand, and the crossings are far apart, so with young children reaching the water is a road crossing rather than a stroll. Low and ground-floor units carry the most storm exposure in late summer, and cancellation terms vary sharply between operators.

  • House or apartment rental in Ocean Springs
    Ocean SpringsMid-range

House or apartment rental in Ocean Springs

A walkable small town with independent restaurants, a shaded grid of streets and a completely different evening from the seafront strip, which suits families who want somewhere to be at six o'clock that is not a hotel lobby.

    • Walkable town centre with restaurants and shops
    • Full kitchens and gardens in most rentals
    • Quiet residential streets and shade from mature trees
    • Art museum and a small harbour within the town

    Fitting a family in

Two- and three-bedroom houses sleeping six are the usual product and work out cheaper per head than two hotel rooms on the seafront.

Watch out. There is no swimming beach here worth the name, so every beach day is a drive back over the bay bridge — about fifteen minutes, and longer at the end of an afternoon. Rentals are scattered through residential streets, so whether the walkable town is actually walkable depends entirely on the address.

  • Casino-resort tower on the Biloxi waterfront
    Point Cadet / Biloxi waterfrontMid-range

Casino-resort tower on the Biloxi waterfront

These are the largest properties on the coast and frequently the cheapest midweek, with the biggest pool decks, several restaurants under one roof and, in some, a bowling alley or an arcade aimed squarely at children.

    • Large pool decks, some with slides or a lazy river
    • Several restaurants and a buffet inside the building
    • Rooms discounted heavily on midweek dates
    • Free self-parking and valet

    Fitting a family in

Two-queen rooms sleeping four are standard and suites are widely available; almost none of them have a kitchen.

Watch out. The gaming floor is the centre of the building, and in several of them the route from the lobby to the lifts, the pool or the restaurants crosses it. Under-21s cannot linger there, smoking is permitted on most Mississippi gaming floors and the smell reaches the corridors, and resort fees are added at check-in on top of the advertised rate.

West Ship Island and the Gulf Islands National Seashore

    Biloxi

A barrier island about twenty kilometres offshore, reached by a passenger ferry from Gulfport harbour that takes roughly an hour each way. The island has white quartz sand, open Gulf water that is genuinely clear, a nineteenth-century brick fort and a boardwalk over the dunes between the two.

    Ages

    Adult, from
    €40

Good to know. It is a full-day commitment with a fixed return sailing and no way off the island in between. Shade is limited to a small pavilion, there is no shop beyond a seasonal snack bar, and the walk from the dock across to the Gulf-facing beach is several hundred metres in open sun. The service runs on a seasonal timetable and cancels in rough weather, so it is planned for early in a stay rather than the last day.

  • The Biloxi beachfront and lighthouse

    The Biloxi beachfront and lighthouse

    Biloxi

A man-made sand beach laid along the shore in the 1950s and maintained since, running almost unbroken for miles west from Biloxi, with free parking along the coastal highway and the cast-iron Biloxi lighthouse standing on the central reservation at the town end.

Good to know. The beach is separated from the hotels by a four-lane highway with widely spaced crossings, which is what decides where to park. The water is shallow and warm but murky, there is no natural shade at all, and lifeguards are not posted along most of it. Jellyfish are common in late summer, and advisories are posted stretch by stretch after heavy rain.

Shrimping boat trip from the small craft harbour

    Biloxi

A short working trip out of Biloxi's small craft harbour on a boat that drops a shrimp trawl, hauls it back and tips the catch onto the deck for passengers to sort through — shrimp, crabs, small fish and whatever else the net finds. The crew names everything before it goes back over the side.

    Ages
    4–14
    Time
    1h 30m
    Adult, from
    €22

Good to know. It is about ninety minutes on a small open boat with limited shade and no escape from the motion, so it does not suit anyone prone to seasickness. Sailings are seasonal and weather-dependent and cancel in wind. The deck gets wet and slippery once the net is up, and the catch includes things with spines, so bare feet are a bad idea.

  • Mississippi Aquarium, Gulfport
    Animals

    Mississippi Aquarium, Gulfport

    Biloxi

A modern aquarium in Gulfport, twenty minutes west along the coast, built around Gulf and Mississippi river habitats, with an outdoor dolphin pool, an alligator enclosure and a walk-through aviary alongside the tanks.

    Ages
    2–14
    Time
    3h
    Adult, from
    €30

Good to know. A good part of the site is outdoors, which makes it hot in high summer and much less useful as a wet-weather fallback than it first appears. Animal presentations run to a timetable and the seating fills, so seeing one means arriving before it starts rather than wandering past.

Getting around Biloxi

A car is assumed: the coast runs for forty kilometres along one highway and the bus network is not built for visitors. The coastal highway links Biloxi, Gulfport and Pass Christian along the seafront and is slow but scenic; Interstate 10 runs parallel a few kilometres inland and is the fast way between them. Gulfport-Biloxi airport sits between the two towns, and New Orleans is about ninety minutes west by road, which is the usual long-haul arrival point. Parking along the beach is free and plentiful, which is unusual on this coast, but the four-lane highway between the car and the sand has long gaps between crossings — so the parking spot is chosen by where the crossing is, not by where the sand looks best.

Biloxi tips for families

  • When to go

Book late summer with the hurricane season understood

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to the end of November, and the risk on this coast concentrates between mid-August and early October. A named storm rarely arrives without warning — the forecast track is public days ahead — but it produces evacuations, closed bridges and cancelled ferries. Travel insurance generally responds only once a storm is named and a warning issued, which means buying the policy at the time of booking rather than when the forecast turns, and checking that it covers a trip cut short rather than only one never taken.

  • With kids

The casinos are the waterfront, and they are not for children

Casino resorts own much of the seafront and several are the most prominent hotels in town. Under-21s cannot be on the gaming floor and, in many of them, the route from the lobby to the pool or the restaurants crosses it. Smoking is still permitted on most Mississippi gaming floors and the smell carries into the corridors. None of that makes them unusable, but it is worth knowing before booking on price alone.

  • Getting around

The clear water needs a ferry and most of a day

The mainland water is warm, shallow and murky year-round; the open Gulf and the white sand are on the barrier islands. The ferry from Gulfport takes roughly an hour each way and runs on a seasonal timetable, so the island is a full day out with no shop, no shade beyond what is carried and no way back before the boat leaves. Water, sunscreen and a shade tent go in the bag accordingly.

  • Health & safety

Read the sign at the beach access before swimming

Water quality on the Sound is monitored and advisories are posted on individual stretches after heavy rain or when freshwater is diverted into the system upstream. Jellyfish are common through the warm months. Both are ordinary rather than alarming, and both are published at the access points — the sign is the thing to read, and it changes stretch by stretch.

Biloxi with kids: common questions

Is the beach at Biloxi any good?
It depends what is wanted from it. The sand is wide, public, free to park beside and runs for miles, and the water is shallow and very warm, which is excellent for small children. It is also usually brown rather than clear, because the Mississippi Sound is a shallow estuary sheltered behind the barrier islands. Clear Gulf water means taking the ferry to Ship Island.
Are the casinos a problem for a family holiday?
They are not dangerous, but they are not a family attraction either, and pretending otherwise leads to bad bookings. Children cannot be on the gaming floors, several resorts route guests across them between the lobby and the pool, and smoking is permitted on most of them. Plenty of non-casino hotels and condos face the same beach at similar prices.
Is it safe to travel to the Gulf coast during hurricane season?
Millions of people do it every year, and the realistic risk is disruption rather than danger: storms are tracked for days before landfall and evacuations are orderly. The season runs June to November and peaks between mid-August and early October. Travelling in that window is a decision to make with insurance bought early enough to respond to a named storm.
How many days does Biloxi need?
Two to four. That covers a beach day, a day on Ship Island, the seafood museum and a shrimping trip without running short of things that are not a casino. Families wanting a full week on a Gulf beach usually pair it with the Alabama or Florida coast further east.
What is there to do if it rains?
Not a great deal on the seafront itself, which is the honest answer. The aquarium at Gulfport and the maritime and seafood museum in Biloxi are the two indoor options of any size, and the art museum in Ocean Springs fills a good hour. Summer rain here usually arrives as a heavy afternoon thunderstorm and clears within the hour.
