Crete with Kids: Best Areas to Stay, Beaches & Costs

Crete is large enough to work like a small country: two international airports, hundreds of kilometres of coast, mountains in the middle and the best-known archaeological site in Greece. For families that means a week does not have to be spent on one beach — there are water parks, gorges, Venetian harbour towns and the Minoan palace at Knossos within reach of most bases. A car is what makes it work.

Why Crete works with children

  • Beaches for every age

Shallow lagoons in the west, long sandy strips in the north, quieter coves in the south.

  • The Minoan palace at Knossos

Europe's oldest city site, with enough standing structure to make sense to children.

  • Gorges and mountains inland

Walks ranging from an easy hour to the full-day Samaria gorge.

  • Better value than the Cyclades

Accommodation and eating out cost significantly less for the same standard.

Where to stay

Best areas in Crete for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly beaches and atmosphere versus knossos and big resorts.
  • Chania & the west

    Best for beaches and atmosphere

A Venetian harbour town with the Elafonissi and Balos lagoons within driving distance.

  • Rethymno

    Best for a central base

Long sandy town beach, an old town to walk, and roughly midway between the two airports.

  • Heraklion & the east

Best for knossos and big resorts

Closest to the main archaeological site, with the island's largest concentration of all-inclusive hotels.

Family hotel picks in Crete

  • Crete — north-coast family hotels
    Rethymno / Chania / HeraklionMid-range

    Crete — north-coast family hotels

The north coast has the sandy town beaches, the airports and the widest range of hotels, from all-inclusive resorts to apartments with a pool.

    • Sandy beaches within walking distance in the main towns
    • All-inclusive and half-board options side by side
    • Central for day trips to Knossos and the gorges

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms and two-bedroom apartments are both widely available and reasonably priced outside August.

Watch out. The north coast catches the summer meltemi wind. If calm water matters, check which way your beach faces.

Getting around Crete

A car is close to essential for reaching the good beaches; the coastal highway along the north is fast and straightforward, while mountain roads are slow and winding. Buses connect the main towns but not the beaches worth driving to. Book automatic transmission well ahead.

Crete tips for families

  • When to go

The famous lagoons need an early start

Elafonissi and Balos are both long drives with limited parking. Arrive before 10:00 or take a boat instead.

  • With kids

Head south when the north is windy

The north coast catches the summer meltemi. South-coast beaches are usually calm on the same day.

Crete with kids: common questions

Where should families stay in Crete?
Rethymno for a central base with a long sandy town beach, Chania for atmosphere and the western lagoons, or the Heraklion area for Knossos and the largest resorts. All three work; the deciding factor is which airport you fly into.
How many days do you need in Crete?
Seven to ten. A week covers one region properly with a couple of day trips. Ten to twelve allows splitting between the west and the centre.
