Day 1 · Crete
Arrive and settle
Airport, car, and the town beach.
Chania or Heraklion to Rethymno
Around an hour from either airport on the north-coast highway.
Rethymno town beach
Long, sandy and directly behind the old town.

Crete is big enough that a week can mix beach days with real sightseeing without feeling like a tour. This route bases in Rethymno, roughly midway between the two airports, and uses a hire car to reach a lagoon, a gorge and the Minoan palace at Knossos — with three days doing nothing in particular, which is the point of a Greek island week.
Families who do not want to drive, or who want a walk-out-of-the-hotel-onto-the-sand week. A Rhodes all-inclusive does that better.
Day 1 · Crete
Airport, car, and the town beach.
Chania or Heraklion to Rethymno
Around an hour from either airport on the north-coast highway.
Rethymno town beach
Long, sandy and directly behind the old town.
Day 2 · Crete
Nothing scheduled.
Local beaches
The north coast catches the summer meltemi. If it is windy, drive south — the other coast is usually calm on the same day.
Day 3 · Crete
The Minoan palace, early, then Heraklion.
Palace of Knossos
The largest Bronze Age site in Crete, with enough reconstruction to make the layout legible to children.
Heraklion archaeological museum
Holds the frescoes and finds from the site itself, and is air-conditioned.
Good to know. Exposed and very hot by mid-morning. A guide makes a real difference with children.
Day 4 · Crete
Venetian harbour, a fort and the sea.
Rethymno old town
A Venetian harbour, a fortress and narrow shaded streets — walkable in a morning.
Day 5 · Crete
A long drive to the best beach for small children in Europe.
Elafonissi
A shallow pink-sand lagoon, warm and knee-deep a long way out.
Good to know. Two hours each way on winding roads, with parking that fills by mid-morning. Leave early or take a boat instead.
Day 6 · Crete
A short gorge walk for older children, or another beach day.
A short gorge walk
Crete has many shorter gorges suitable for children; the full Samaria route is a serious day and realistic only from about twelve.
Alternative: south-coast beach
Quieter and more sheltered than the north when the meltemi blows.
Day 7 · Crete
Drop the car and fly.
Airport transfer
About an hour to either Chania or Heraklion.

Where to stay

The north coast has the sandy town beaches, the airports and the widest range of hotels, from all-inclusive resorts to apartments with a pool.
Fitting a family in
Family rooms and two-bedroom apartments are both widely available and reasonably priced outside August.
Watch out. The north coast catches the summer meltemi wind. If calm water matters, check which way your beach faces.

Crete
The largest Bronze Age site in Crete and the centre of Minoan civilisation, with partially reconstructed halls and frescoes that make the layout legible.
Good to know. Open, exposed and very hot by mid-morning in summer. A guide makes a substantial difference with children.

Crete
A 16 km descent through one of Europe's longest gorges, ending at a coastal village reached only by boat.
Good to know. A serious full-day hike on rough ground with no exit point once started. Not suitable below about twelve.

Getting around
Greek island fleets are mostly manual and automatics sell out first for summer dates.
When to go
The meltemi makes north-facing beaches unusable in July and August. The south coast is usually calm on the same day.
