Athens with Kids

Athens works best as a two-day bookend to an island week rather than a destination in itself. The Acropolis and the museum below it are genuinely world-class and can be done in a morning, the metro is fast and cheap, and the city has enough parks and rooftop cafés to fill the gaps. Summer heat is the main constraint — the site has no shade at all.

Why Athens works with children

  • The Acropolis in a single morning

Compact enough to see properly before the heat builds.

  • A fast metro from the airport

Direct line to the centre, which makes a short stopover practical.

  • A museum built for the site

The Acropolis Museum has glass floors over live excavations that hold children's attention.

Where to stay

Best areas in Athens for families

2 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly first-time visitors versus value and calm.
  • Plaka & Makrigianni

    Best for first-time visitors

Below the Acropolis, walkable, with the museum and metro close by.

  • Koukaki

    Best for value and calm

Residential, a few minutes further out, with better-priced apartments.

Family hotel picks in Athens

  • Athens — apartments below the Acropolis
    Plaka / KoukakiMid-range

Athens — apartments below the Acropolis

A two-night stopover works best within walking distance of the site and the museum, and apartments here sleep four for less than two hotel rooms.

    • Walk to the Acropolis and its museum
    • Metro to the airport and the ferry port
    • Rooftop terraces with a view of the rock

    Fitting a family in

One and two-bedroom apartments are plentiful in Koukaki, just south of the tourist centre.

Watch out. Many older buildings have no lift, and Plaka's streets are noisy late into the evening.

Good to know. No shade on the rock and polished marble underfoot. Open at 08:00 in summer — take that slot.

Getting around Athens

The metro is quick, air-conditioned and reaches the airport and the port at Piraeus directly. The central sights are walkable from Plaka. No car is needed.

Athens tips for families

  • When to go

Be at the Acropolis when it opens

There is no shade on the rock and the marble is slippery underfoot. Opening time or late afternoon are the only comfortable slots in summer.

  • Getting around

The metro reaches the ferry port

Piraeus is on the metro network, which makes an island connection straightforward without a taxi.

Athens with kids: common questions

How many days in Athens with kids?
Two. One for the Acropolis and its museum, one for the centre, a park and a rooftop view. Athens is a strong bookend to an island week rather than a week in itself.
