Lake Garda with Kids

Lake Garda is the most resort-like place in northern Italy without being a resort. The southern shore has shallow swimming beaches, Italy's largest theme park and two big water parks; the northern end is steeper, cooler and geared towards hiking and watersports. It pairs naturally with the Dolomites, about two hours north, which is why the two appear together on so many family itineraries.

Why Lake Garda works with children

  • Swimming without the sea

Shallow, calm, lifeguarded lake beaches on the southern shore.

  • Italy's biggest theme park

Gardaland, plus a sea-life centre and two large water parks nearby.

  • Mountains at the north end

Cable cars, via ferrata and cycling around Riva del Garda.

  • Cheaper than the coast

Lakeside apartments and family hotels cost less than equivalent Adriatic or Ligurian resorts.

Where to stay

Best areas in Lake Garda for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly theme parks and young children versus active families and teenagers.
  • Peschiera & Lazise (south-east)

Best for theme parks and young children

Flattest shoreline, shallow beaches, and the closest base to Gardaland and the water parks.

  • Sirmione (south)

Best for a short, scenic stay

A peninsula town with thermal baths and Roman ruins. Beautiful and correspondingly crowded in August.

  • Riva del Garda & Torbole (north)

Best for active families and teenagers

Windsurfing, cycling and mountain walks, with cooler air and a more dramatic setting.

Family hotel picks in Lake Garda

  • Southern Garda — apartments with a pool
    Peschiera / LaziseMid-range

Southern Garda — apartments with a pool

Self-catering with a pool is the most practical setup for a week on the lake, and the southern shore is closest to the theme parks and the flattest beaches.

    • Kitchen for breakfasts and one meal a day
    • Pool on site for the afternoon heat
    • Short drive to Gardaland and the water parks
    • Flat, walkable lakeside promenades

    Fitting a family in

Two-bedroom apartments are widely available and usually cheaper than two hotel rooms.

Watch out. August books out months ahead and carries minimum-stay rules, usually a full week starting Saturday.

Getting around Lake Garda

A car makes the lake far easier, though the southern towns are walkable and connected by ferry. Ferries are slow but scenic and a genuine attraction in themselves. The lakeside road narrows into tunnels along the western shore and is slow in peak season.

Lake Garda tips for families

  • When to go

Do Gardaland on a weekday, early

Weekend and August queues are long. Arriving at opening typically buys three or four rides before the park fills.

  • Packing

    Pack water shoes

Most Garda beaches are pebble rather than sand, which is uncomfortable barefoot for children.
