Limassol with Kids

Limassol is Cyprus's second city rather than a resort built for tourism, and that is both its advantage and its drawback. It has a seafront park chain that runs for kilometres with playgrounds and cycle lanes, a marina, a castle and a working old town, a Greco-Roman city on the clifftop 20 minutes west, and the Troodos mountains within an hour inland — so there is more to do off the hotel grounds here than at any other Cypriot base. What it does not have is a postcard beach. The town sand is grey-brown and coarse, the strip in front of the hotels is narrow in places, and the seafront is backed by a busy road and a dense wall of apartment blocks and towers. Families who want pale shallow sand should look at Protaras or Coral Bay; families who want a week with things to do should look here.

Why Limassol works with children

  • A real city, not a resort strip

Tavernas, a marina full of restaurants and a working old town mean evenings that do not depend on hotel entertainment.

  • The Troodos mountains within an hour

Pine forest, waterfalls and painted Byzantine churches 45 to 75 minutes inland, several degrees cooler than the coast.

  • A Greco-Roman city on the clifftop

Ancient Kourion, with floor mosaics and a theatre above the sea, is around 20 minutes west of town.

  • A promenade built for walking and playing

The rebuilt seafront park runs for kilometres with playgrounds, water features and cycle lanes along it.

Where to stay

Best areas in Limassol for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly beach-first families versus quieter stays.
  • Germasogeia & Amathus

    Best for beach-first families

The eastern tourist strip where most large family hotels sit, on the better stretch of town beach, with buses and a continuous promenade into the centre.

  • Marina & old town

Best for families who want to walk to dinner

Restaurants, the castle and the marina on the doorstep, but no hotel beach — swimming means a short bus or taxi ride east.

  • Pissouri & the western villages

    Best for quieter stays

Around half an hour west towards Kourion, small-scale and calm, with a steep road down to the bay and a car needed for everything.

Family hotel picks in Limassol

  • Limassol — seafront resorts on the eastern strip
    Germasogeia / AmathusMid-range

Limassol — seafront resorts on the eastern strip

This is the better stretch of the town beach, and it is the only part of Limassol where the promenade, the sand and a hotel pool are all on the doorstep of the same room.

    • Direct access to the promenade and the seafront park chain
    • Pools with children's sections and kids' clubs at the larger properties
    • Buses and a continuous walking route into the centre
    • Around 45 minutes from Larnaca airport

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms sleeping four are standard and interconnecting doubles are common at the bigger hotels.

Watch out. The beach in front is grey-brown coarse sand, narrow in places, and the busy coast road separates some hotels from the sea. Several neighbouring plots have been under tower construction, so a sea-view room is worth confirming rather than assuming.

  • Limassol — apartments near the old town and marina
    Old town / MarinaMid-range

Limassol — apartments near the old town and marina

Staying in the centre turns dinner into a walk rather than a taxi and puts the castle, the marina and the start of the promenade within a few minutes of the front door.

    • Restaurants, the castle and the marina on foot
    • Kitchen for breakfasts and early dinners
    • The seafront park chain begins nearby

    Fitting a family in

One and two-bedroom apartments are plentiful, usually in modern blocks with a lift and sometimes a rooftop pool.

Watch out. There is no swimmable beach on the doorstep — the usable sand is a bus or taxi ride east — and the marina and old-town bars run late at weekends.

Good to know. An open clifftop with almost no shade and a constant onshore wind, and unfenced drops behind the theatre. Early morning is the only comfortable slot in summer.

Good to know. The planted shade is young and thin in places, which makes the middle of a summer afternoon hard going. Bikes and scooters can be hired along the promenade.

Good to know. Forty-five to seventy-five minutes of continuous bends in each direction, which is the problem for children prone to travel sickness. Some roads and trails close after winter snow.

Getting around Limassol

Buses run along the seafront between the tourist strip, the centre and the port frequently enough to manage a week without a car, and the promenade itself is walkable and cycleable end to end. A car earns its cost on the days you want Kourion, the Troodos villages or the wine villages inland, none of which have a useful bus service. Seafront parking is metered and fills in the evening, so a hotel with its own spaces is worth checking for.

Limassol tips for families

  • With kids

The town sand is grey and coarse

Cyprus's pale, shallow beaches are at Protaras and Coral Bay, not here. The Limassol strip is dark, gritty sand that heats up quickly, and the water deepens faster than on the east coast. Governor's Beach to the east and Pissouri to the west are both around half an hour out and noticeably better for swimming.

  • Getting around

The mountain road is one long bend

The climb into Troodos is 45 to 75 minutes of continuous curves in each direction, which is the real obstacle for children who get travel sick. The temperature drops sharply at the top, so a jumper is worth packing even in August.

  • When to go

Kourion is exposed to sun and wind together

The site sits on an open clifftop with almost no shade and a steady onshore wind. Early morning is the comfortable slot, hats need chin straps, and the drops behind the theatre are unfenced.

Limassol with kids: common questions

Is Limassol good for families?
It is the best Cypriot base for families who want a city as well as a beach — a long seafront park, a marina, an old town, Kourion and the Troodos mountains are all within reach. The beach is the weak point: grey, coarse sand backed by a built-up seafront.
Is the beach in Limassol sandy?
Yes, but it is grey-brown and coarse rather than pale and fine, narrow in places, and the sea shelves more steeply than on the east coast. The stretch in front of the Germasogeia hotels is the better part of it.
Limassol or Paphos with kids?
Paphos has better beaches and a 15-minute airport transfer. Limassol has considerably more to do outside the hotel and is closer to the mountains. For a pure beach week, Paphos; for a mixed week, Limassol.
How far is Limassol from the airport?
Around 45 minutes from Larnaca and roughly an hour from Paphos, both almost entirely on motorway.
