About this trip

The compressed version of the classic route for families who cannot take two weeks. It drops Hakone — the leg that costs the most days per attraction — and keeps the three cities plus Nara as a day trip. The pace is deliberately higher than the 14-day route, so it suits slightly older children.

Ages 6+10 daysActive paceNo car neededHigher-end

Why the route is built this way

  • Hakone is the first thing to cut: it is the leg with the highest days-to-attractions ratio.
  • Three bases in ten days is already two hotel changes; a fourth would consume a whole day of the trip.
  • Nara stays as a day trip because it is the strongest half-day in the region for children.
  • Universal Studios keeps a full day and a recovery day after it, even on a compressed schedule.

Who this trip is not for

Families with children under six, or anyone who wants a rest day. This route has no slack in it — the 14-day version is the one with room to have a bad day.

Day-by-day: 10 days in Japan

A suggested plan, built around one main thing a day with the heavier days followed by lighter ones.
  1. Day 1 · Tokyo

    Arrive and settle

Transfer, IC cards, a short walk and an early night.

    Easy day
    • Airport to hotel

Narita 60–90 minutes, Haneda 30–45. Take the direct train or bus rather than changing lines.

    • IC cards at the airport

Far quicker than queuing in a city station later.

  2. Day 2 · Tokyo

    Shibuya, Harajuku and Yoyogi

One neighbourhood, one shrine, one park.

    Moderate
    • Shibuya and Harajuku

The streets around the crossing, not just the crossing.

    • Meiji Jingu and Yoyogi Park

Shrine and open space in the same stop.

  3. Day 4 · Tokyo

    Ueno and the museums

Zoo, science museum and the park.

    Moderate
    • Ueno Park

Zoo and science museum in one park, easy to extend or cut short.

Good to know. Arrange luggage forwarding to Kyoto tonight.

  4. Day 5 · Kyoto

    Shinkansen to Kyoto

    Morning train, riverside afternoon.

    Moderate
    • Tokyo to Kyoto

Around 2h20 on a Hikari service with reserved seats.

    • Gion and the Kamo river

Old streets and riverside space on the first afternoon.

  5. Day 6 · Kyoto

    Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari

Two early starts in one day — the heaviest day of the trip.

    Full day
    • Bamboo grove at opening

Before 08:30 or not at all.

    • Fushimi Inari in the late afternoon

Free and open 24 hours. Walk to the first viewpoint and turn back — the dense gate tunnels are in the first fifteen minutes.

Good to know. This is the day to cut in half if anyone is flagging. Fushimi Inari is open late, so it can move to the evening.

  6. Day 7 · Kyoto

    Nara day trip

    Deer park and Todai-ji.

    Moderate
    • Nara Park

45 minutes each way; the park is flat and walkable.

    • Todai-ji

The Great Buddha hall, a short walk from the deer.

  7. Day 8 · Osaka

    To Osaka and Dotonbori

Short train, easy afternoon, neon evening.

    Easy day
    • Kyoto to Osaka

Under 30 minutes on a rapid service.

    • Dotonbori

A short evening visit is enough.

  8. Day 10 · Osaka

    Home

    Transfer to Kansai International.

    Moderate
    • Osaka to Kansai airport

Around 50 minutes by rapid train.

Where to stay

Accommodation on this route

Areas and property types for each stop, with what to check before booking.
  • Shinjuku — family rooms near the station
    ShinjukuMid-range

Shinjuku — family rooms near the station

Shinjuku has the densest cluster of hotels that genuinely sleep four or five in one room, and direct lines to both airports, Hakone and the rest of the city.

    • Direct Narita Express and Odakyu Romancecar services
    • Large hotels with quad and connecting rooms
    • 24-hour food within a few minutes' walk
    • Shinjuku Gyoen park for a slow morning

    Fitting a family in

Look for rooms described as quad, family or 'triple + extra bed'. Japanese hotel rooms are small: confirm the stated maximum occupancy rather than assuming a sofa bed exists.

Watch out. The station is enormous and poorly signposted at first. Pick a hotel with an exit number in its directions.

  • Ueno & Asakusa — better value, calmer evenings
    Ueno / AsakusaBudget

Ueno & Asakusa — better value, calmer evenings

Noticeably cheaper than the western districts, next to the zoo and museum park, and a quieter environment with young children.

    • Walking distance to Ueno Park, the zoo and the science museum
    • Direct Keisei Skyliner to Narita
    • Old-town restaurants that open earlier than the city centre

    Fitting a family in

More Japanese-style rooms in this area, which often sleep a family of four on futons more comfortably than a Western twin.

Watch out. Further from Shibuya and Shinjuku — budget 25–35 minutes each way for a night out.

  • Kyoto Station — shortest journeys with kids
    Kyoto StationMid-range

Kyoto Station — shortest journeys with kids

Kyoto's buses are the hard part of the city with children. Staying at the station cuts most journeys to a single ride and puts Nara, Osaka and the Shinkansen on the doorstep.

    • Direct trains to Nara, Osaka and Kansai airport
    • Department-store food halls in the station building
    • The widest choice of larger rooms in the city

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms in Kyoto book out months ahead for cherry-blossom and autumn-colour weeks. Reserve earlier here than anywhere else in Japan.

Watch out. The station district has little atmosphere in the evening compared with Gion or the river.

  • Osaka Umeda — the day-trip base
    Umeda / Osaka StationMid-range

Osaka Umeda — the day-trip base

Better value and easier family rooms than Kyoto, with Kyoto and Nara both under an hour away and a direct line to Universal Studios.

    • Direct rail to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Kansai airport
    • Large hotels with quad rooms
    • Extensive covered shopping and food for wet days

    Fitting a family in

Quad rooms are more common and cheaper here than in Kyoto, which makes Osaka the practical base for a family doing both cities.

Watch out. Less atmospheric than Kyoto. Plan evenings in Namba or Dotonbori, 10 minutes by subway.

  • Osaka — hotels on the Universal line
    Bentencho / Universal CityMid-range

Osaka — hotels on the Universal line

A theme-park day is long at both ends. Being on the JR Yumesaki line removes two changes when everyone is tired.

    • Direct train to the park entrance
    • Official partner hotels offer early park entry on some tickets
    • Quieter at night than the central districts

    Fitting a family in

Partner hotels near the park are built for families and have the most four-person rooms in the city.

Watch out. Prices at the park-adjacent hotels rise sharply on peak dates, and the area has little to do besides the park.

Common questions

Is 10 days enough for Japan with children?
For three cities, yes. It means an active pace with no rest day, so it suits children of around eight and upwards better than younger ones.
Should you add Hakone to a 10-day trip?
Generally not. Hakone needs two nights to be worth the transfer, which on a ten-day trip means removing a full city day.
