Gothenburg with Kids

Gothenburg is Sweden's second city and the most straightforward one to visit with children, mostly because its biggest attraction is a theme park inside the city rather than an hour outside it. A science centre with an indoor rainforest, a floating museum of ships that can be boarded, and a tram network that reaches all of them sit within a few kilometres. From the end of one tram line, ferries run to a group of islands where cars are not permitted at all, which makes a swimming afternoon a public-transport journey rather than a drive. The trade-offs are the weather — this is the wet side of the country, and rain falls on a large share of days in every season — and a city that is pleasant rather than spectacular, so two or three days usually covers it.

Why Gothenburg works with children

  • A theme park inside the city

Liseberg is a tram ride from the centre, set in gardens, with a large area of gentle rides for younger children alongside the big coasters.

  • One ticket covers trams and island ferries

The regional card carries a family from the centre to the end of the tram line and onto the archipelago boats without a second purchase.

  • Islands with no cars on them

The southern archipelago bans private cars entirely, so lanes, swimming rocks and small sandy coves need far less supervision than a mainland beach.

  • Ships children climb inside

A floating museum moors more than a dozen vessels together, including a naval destroyer and a submarine, connected by gangways.

Where to stay

Best areas in Gothenburg for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly first visits and short stays versus longer stays and lower food costs.
  • Centre & Avenyn

Best for first visits and short stays

Walking distance to the station, the main avenue and the canal boats, with trams in every direction. The widest choice of places to eat and the easiest base without a car.

  • Korsvägen & Liseberg

    Best for theme-park-led trips

The park gate, the science centre and a major tram interchange within a few hundred metres, which allows a mid-afternoon retreat and a return. Quiet in the evening and short of food that is not aimed at visitors.

  • Majorna & Linnéstaden

Best for longer stays and lower food costs

Residential districts west of the centre, on the tram line to the archipelago ferries, with larger flats, ordinary supermarkets and neighbourhood restaurants. Ten to fifteen minutes by tram from the middle of town.

Gothenburg — family rooms around Korsvägen

The park gate, the science centre and a tram interchange all sit within a few hundred metres, so a theme-park day can be broken in the middle and picked up again — the difference between one exhausting day and two manageable ones.

    • Walk to the theme-park entrance
    • Science centre next door for a wet day
    • Tram interchange for the rest of the city
    • Breakfast included at most properties

    Fitting a family in

Rooms for four are common but often mean two adults and two children in bunks; connecting rooms or apartment-style units are the dependable way to sleep five.

Watch out. This is an events and transport district: concert and match nights are loud and push room rates up sharply, and there is little to eat nearby that is not aimed at visitors.

  • Gothenburg — apartments in Majorna and Linnéstaden
    Majorna / LinnéstadenMid-range

Gothenburg — apartments in Majorna and Linnéstaden

Residential districts on the tram line that runs out to the archipelago ferries, with bigger flats, ordinary supermarkets and restaurants priced for residents rather than for a weekend.

    • Kitchen and laundry
    • Direct tram to the island ferry terminal
    • Neighbourhood restaurants and supermarkets
    • Parks and playgrounds within a few streets

    Fitting a family in

Two- and three-bedroom flats sleep four to six comfortably, which is rare in the city centre at the same price.

Watch out. Older buildings in Majorna frequently have no lift and steep stairwells — a real problem with a pram and luggage. The tram into the centre takes ten to fifteen minutes, so this is not a walk-everywhere base.

Things to do in Gothenburg with kids

  • Liseberg
    Theme parkBook ahead

    Liseberg

    Gothenburg

A theme park inside the city, reached by tram and laid out in gardens rather than across asphalt, with wooden and steel coasters, a large section of gentle rides for younger children, and a separate winter season built around a Christmas market.

    Ages
    2–16
    Time
    7h
    Adult, from
    €35

Good to know. The headline coasters carry height minimums in the region of 130–140 cm, which excludes most under-tens; entry and ride access are sold separately in parts of the season, so the wrong combination is easy to buy. The park also closes for stretches between its summer and winter seasons.

  • Universeum
    Museum

    Universeum

    Gothenburg

A science centre over several floors, with an indoor rainforest walked from the canopy downwards, a large aquarium section including sharks and rays, and hands-on physics, space and technology exhibits.

    Ages
    3–15
    Time
    3h
    Adult, from
    €26

Good to know. The rainforest floor is kept hot and very humid, which is hard going for children still in outdoor clothing — the lockers exist for that reason. It is the city's default wet-weather destination, so rainy days and school holidays fill it, and the aquarium tanks are the part with the queues.

  • Southern archipelago islands
    Nature

    Southern archipelago islands

    Gothenburg

A group of car-free islands — Styrsö, Brännö, Donsö and Vrångö among them — reached by ferry from the end of a tram line, with swimming rocks, small sandy coves and lanes used by bicycles and service vehicles rather than cars.

    Ages
    2–16
    Time
    6h
    Adult, from
    €4

Good to know. The water on this coast is cold and swimming is realistic mainly in late July and August. Ferries run to a timetable that thins outside summer, and the smaller islands have very little in the way of shops, so food and water travel with the family. Private cars are not permitted on the islands at all.

Getting around Gothenburg

One Västtrafik ticket covers the trams, the city buses and the southern-archipelago ferries, bought in the app or as a period card, and the tram is genuinely the quickest way across the centre. Tram lines run out to Saltholmen, where the island boats leave; driving there is a poor idea because parking is scarce and the islands have no cars, so the tram is not a compromise but the intended route. Small children travel free with a paying adult, and the centre is flat enough that walking between the station and the theme park is realistic.

Gothenburg tips for families

  • When to go

The theme park is seasonal, not year-round

Liseberg runs a summer season and a separate winter season with a closed stretch between them, and the ride line-up differs between the two. Checking the season calendar before booking flights avoids arriving in the gap.

  • With kids

Height limits decide which ticket to buy

The headline coasters have minimums in the region of 130–140 cm, which rules out most under-tens. Entry and ride access are priced separately in parts of the season, so it is possible to buy an expensive combination a small child cannot use.

  • Getting around

Reach the islands by tram, not by car

Parking at the ferry terminal is limited and expensive, and the islands themselves are car-free, so a hire car simply waits on the mainland. The tram-and-ferry combination is covered by one regional ticket.

  • Packing

Build the day around a rain plan

This is the wetter side of Sweden and showers arrive in any month. Waterproofs for everyone and one indoor option held in reserve turn a washed-out day into a changed one.

Gothenburg with kids: common questions

How many days do you need in Gothenburg with kids?
Two to three for the city and the science centre. Add a day if the theme park gets a full visit, and another if the family wants an island swimming afternoon rather than a quick crossing.
Is Liseberg suitable for young children?
Yes — there is a substantial area of gentle rides and a fairy-tale section aimed at the under-eights. The large coasters have height minimums around 130–140 cm, so a family with small children should expect to use a fraction of the ride list.
Can you reach the Gothenburg archipelago without a car?
That is the normal way to do it. A tram runs to the ferry terminal and the boats to the southern islands are covered by the same regional ticket. The islands are closed to private cars, so nothing is lost by arriving on foot.
Is Gothenburg easier than Stockholm with children?
Smaller, flatter, cheaper and quicker to cover, with a theme park inside the city. Stockholm has far more variety and the better archipelago. A first trip to Sweden with young children is often easier here; a longer trip wants both.
