Tromsø with Kids

Tromsø works from about age 6, and most families need 3 to 5 days.

Tromsø sits well inside the Arctic Circle and is the most practical base for a northern lights trip with children: a real town with hotels, restaurants and an airport, rather than a remote camp. Daytime activities — husky sledding, reindeer camps, a cable car above the town — matter as much as the aurora itself, because sightings are never guaranteed and the days in midwinter are very short.

Why Tromsø works with children

  • Northern lights from September to March

Chase tours travel inland to find clear sky when the coast is overcast.

  • Huskies and reindeer camps

Daytime activities that work regardless of whether the aurora appears.

  • A town, not a wilderness camp

Hotels, restaurants and an aquarium mean a bad-weather day is still fine.

Tromsø — central hotels with breakfast

In an Arctic winter, being able to walk to dinner and have tours collect you from reception matters more than the room itself.

    • Tour pick-up and drop-off at the hotel
    • Generous breakfast buffet, often the best value meal of the day
    • Walking distance to restaurants in the dark and cold

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms are available but limited in winter. Book well ahead for the aurora season.

Watch out. Prices peak between Christmas and February. Booking three months ahead makes a substantial difference.

Getting around Tromsø

The centre is walkable and buses cover the rest. Most activities include hotel pick-up. Driving in Arctic winter conditions is not recommended unless you have experience of studded tyres and ice.

Tromsø tips for families

  • Packing

    Thermal suits are usually provided

Tour operators lend full thermal overalls and boots, including children's sizes. Bring thermal base layers, wool socks, hats and gloves.

  • With kids

    Aurora tours run late

Chase tours often return after midnight. Plan slow mornings, and consider one tour rather than three consecutive nights with young children.

  • When to go

    Midwinter has no daylight

The sun does not rise between late November and mid-January. There is twilight around midday, but plan activities that do not depend on daylight.

Tromsø with kids: common questions

What age is a northern lights trip suitable for?
From about six. Younger children struggle with late-night tours, cold waits and short winter days. Husky and reindeer camps work well at any age, and both run in daylight.
Are northern lights guaranteed in Tromsø?
No. Sightings depend on solar activity and cloud cover. Three or four nights materially improves the odds, and chase tours drive inland to find clear sky.
