Vienna with Kids

Vienna works from about age 3, and most families need 2 to 4 days.

Vienna is an easy city with children: flat, green, spotlessly run, and with one of the best public transport systems in Europe. The headline attractions happen to suit families — the world's oldest zoo in a palace garden, a permanent funfair with a 19th-century Ferris wheel, and a children's museum inside Schönbrunn itself. Winter adds the Christmas markets, which are among the best in Europe for younger children.

Why Vienna works with children

  • The oldest zoo in the world

Tiergarten Schönbrunn sits in the palace gardens and consistently ranks among Europe's best.

  • Transport that removes friction

Metro, trams and buses run constantly, and children travel free or at low fares.

  • Parks and the Danube island

Large green spaces and a long river island with swimming and cycling.

  • Museums designed for children

The ZOOM children's museum and the Haus des Meeres aquarium are both built for young visitors.

Where to stay

Best areas in Vienna for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly short city stays versus zoo and palace days.
  • Innere Stadt (1st district)

    Best for short city stays

Everything walkable, at the highest prices and with the smallest rooms.

  • Leopoldstadt (2nd district)

    Best for families

Next to the Prater and the Danube island, with larger apartments and a short tram ride to the centre.

  • Near Schönbrunn (13th / 14th)

Best for zoo and palace days

Quieter and greener, with the palace gardens as a local park.

Family hotel picks in Vienna

  • Vienna — Leopoldstadt apartments
    2nd districtMid-range

    Vienna — Leopoldstadt apartments

Next to the Prater and the Danube island, one or two metro stops from the centre, with the space and value that central hotels cannot match.

    • Walk to the Prater funfair and the Augarten park
    • Two metro lines into the centre
    • Larger apartments at mid-range prices

    Fitting a family in

Two-bedroom apartments are widely available; Viennese hotel rooms rarely sleep four.

Watch out. The area immediately around Praterstern station is busy and less pleasant at night — check the exact street.

Getting around Vienna

The U-Bahn and tram network covers everything a visitor needs. A 24, 48 or 72-hour travel pass is usually better value than single tickets for a family, and under-sixes travel free.

Vienna tips for families

  • Money & costs

The Prater is free to enter

The park itself costs nothing; you pay per ride. It works as a one-hour stop rather than a full day out.

  • Getting around

    Buy a multi-day travel pass

Flat-rate passes cover the metro, trams and buses. With children travelling free or cheap, a family rarely needs individual tickets.

Vienna with kids: common questions

Is Vienna good for young children?
Yes. It is flat, green, safe and easy to move around, with a zoo, a funfair, an aquarium and a dedicated children's museum all inside the city.
How many days do you need in Vienna?
Two to three. One for Schönbrunn and the zoo, one for the centre and a park, and a third for the Prater or a museum day.
