Salzburg with Kids

Salzburg is a compact baroque city under a hilltop fortress, and it works well with children because the interesting things are physical: a funicular up to the castle, a working salt mine with wooden slides, a palace built around practical-joke water fountains. It is also the natural base for the Salzkammergut lakes and the nearby mountains, each under an hour away.

Why Salzburg works with children

  • A fortress you reach by funicular

Hohensalzburg sits directly above the old town, with the ride up as much of the attraction as the castle.

  • Salt mines and trick fountains

Two of the best hands-on attractions in the Alps, both a short trip from the centre.

  • A base for the lakes

Hallstatt, Wolfgangsee and the Salzkammergut are all inside an hour.

  • A comfortable city in summer

Alpine air keeps it far more bearable than the southern European capitals.

Where to stay

Best areas in Salzburg for families

3 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly short stays versus combining city and lakes.
  • Altstadt (old town)

    Best for short stays

Everything within walking distance, at the highest prices and with limited parking.

  • Right bank (Neustadt / Mirabell)

    Best for families

Across the river from the old town, with more apartments, better value and easy walking access.

  • Outside the city

Best for combining city and lakes

Lakeside villages 20–40 minutes out, with swimming and a short drive into Salzburg for a day.

Family hotel picks in Salzburg

  • Salzburg — right-bank apartments
    Neustadt / MirabellMid-range

    Salzburg — right-bank apartments

Across the river from the old town: ten minutes' walk to everything, noticeably cheaper, with more apartments that sleep four than the historic centre offers.

    • Walking distance to the old town and the Mirabell gardens
    • Easier parking than inside the pedestrian zone
    • Supermarkets and neighbourhood restaurants nearby

    Fitting a family in

Two-bedroom apartments are common here and usually cheaper than two old-town hotel rooms.

Watch out. Festival weeks in late July and August push prices up sharply across the whole city.

Getting around Salzburg

The centre is small and walkable, with frequent buses to the outer attractions. The Salzburg Card covers public transport, the funicular and most museum entries, and generally pays for itself within a day. Park outside the old town — the centre is largely pedestrianised.

Salzburg tips for families

  • Money & costs

The Salzburg Card usually pays for itself

It includes the fortress funicular, the Hellbrunn fountains, public transport and the river boats — enough in a single day to cover the cost.

  • Packing

    Dress for the salt mine

Mine temperatures sit around 10°C year-round. Overalls are provided, but bring closed shoes and a layer underneath.

Salzburg with kids: common questions

How many days in Salzburg with kids?
Two in the city, plus one or two for the salt mine, the ice caves or a lake day. Three to four nights covers it comfortably without moving hotels.
Is Hallstatt worth a day trip from Salzburg?
The village is beautiful and very crowded, with limited parking and timed access at busy periods. The salt mine and the skywalk above it are the parts that hold children's attention.
