About this trip

The one trip on the catalog where the transport is the attraction. Mountain railways, fjord ferries and a funicular do all the work, which makes scenery of this scale unusually accessible with young children — nobody has to hike, and nobody has to drive. Long summer daylight takes the pressure off the schedule entirely.

Why the route is built this way

  • No car at any point. The Bergen Railway, the Flåm Line and the fjord ferries connect end to end.
  • The biggest days are sitting-down days: a train, a boat, a funicular.
  • Two bases in seven nights, so most of the week is unpacked.
  • Cabins and apartments with kitchens keep Norway's food costs under control.

Who this trip is not for

Families on a tight budget. Norway is among the most expensive countries in Europe, and there is no version of this trip that is cheap.

Family stays in Norway

Day-by-day: 7 days in Norway

A suggested plan, built around one main thing a day with the heavier days followed by lighter ones.
  1. Day 1 · Bergen & the Fjords

    Arrive in Bergen

Harbour, fish market and the funicular.

    Easy day
    • Fløibanen funicular

From the centre to a viewpoint 320 m above the harbour, with forest trails and a playground at the top.

Good to know. Bergen rains on roughly two days in three. Waterproofs are essential, not precautionary.

  2. Day 2 · Bergen & the Fjords

    Bergen

Bryggen, the aquarium and the cable car.

    Easy day
    • Bryggen wharf

The UNESCO-listed wooden warehouses along the harbour, walkable in an hour.

    • Bergen aquarium

The reliable wet-weather option, and there will be wet weather.

  3. Day 3 · Bergen & the Fjords

    To Flåm by rail

The Bergen Railway, then the Flåm Line descent.

    Moderate

Good to know. Book advance fares. Same-day tickets cost several times as much and summer departures fill.

  4. Day 5 · Bergen & the Fjords

    Aurland and the valley

A viewpoint, a short walk and a slow day.

    Easy day
    • Stegastein viewpoint

A platform projecting 30 m out over the fjord, 650 m above the water, reached by bus from Flåm.

  5. Day 6 · Bergen & the Fjords

    Back to Bergen

The return rail journey, then a final evening.

    Moderate
    • Flåm to Bergen

The same route in reverse, or via bus and ferry for a different view.

  6. Day 7 · Bergen & the Fjords

    Home

    Airport transfer.

    Easy day
    • Bergen airport

The light rail runs from the centre to the terminal.

Where to stay

Areas and property types for each stop, with what to check before booking.
  • Fjords — cabins and apartments
    Flåm / Aurland / VossMid-range

    Fjords — cabins and apartments

Cabins are how families make Norway affordable: they sleep four to six, include a kitchen, and sit in better locations than the hotels.

    • Kitchen, which offsets Norway's restaurant prices
    • Sleeps four to six in one booking
    • Often directly on the fjord or a lake

    Fitting a family in

Cabins and campsite huts routinely sleep four to six and cost well under two hotel rooms.

Watch out. Some campsite huts do not include bed linen or a private bathroom. Check both before booking.

  • Bergen — central apartments
    Bryggen / city centreMid-range

    Bergen — central apartments

A kitchen and a central location together solve Norway's two problems at once: food cost and wet weather with children.

    • Walk to the harbour, fish market and funicular
    • Kitchen and laundry
    • Close to the railway station for the fjord route

    Fitting a family in

Two-bedroom apartments are common and considerably cheaper than two hotel rooms.

Watch out. Cruise-ship days make the harbour area very crowded; check the port schedule if that matters.

Practical information

The decisions that are easy to get wrong and expensive to fix once you have arrived.
  • Money & costs

Advance rail fares are the whole saving

The Bergen Railway and the Flåm Line release cheaper advance tickets that disappear as departures fill. Same-day fares cost several times as much.

  • Money & costs

    Book accommodation with a kitchen

Restaurant prices are the sharpest cost shock in Norway. Cabins and apartments with kitchens are how families keep the week affordable.

  • Packing

Pack for four seasons in one day

Fjord weather changes quickly even in July, and open ferry decks are cold. Waterproofs and a warm layer per child.

Common questions

Can you do the Norwegian fjords without a car?
Yes. The Bergen Railway, the Flåm Line and the fjord ferries connect end to end and can be booked as a single through journey. A car only becomes necessary for the smaller fjord arms and Lofoten.
Is Norway suitable for young children?
Yes, particularly because the scenery does not require hiking. Ferries, trains and viewpoints do the work. The main constraints are cost and weather.
How expensive is Norway for a family?
It is among the most expensive countries in Europe, with restaurant meals the sharpest cost. Self-catering, cabins and advance rail fares bring it much closer to alpine Europe.
