Mellieħa with Kids

Mellieħa is the north-west corner of Malta and the part of the country that comes closest to a conventional beach holiday. Mellieħa Bay — Għadira — is the largest sandy beach on the islands and shelves so gradually that small children can wade a long way out, Golden Bay is ten minutes down the coast, and the Ċirkewwa terminal at the tip of the peninsula is where both the Gozo car ferry and the Comino boats leave from. The catch is vertical: the village sits on top of a steep hill and the beach is at the bottom of it, which is a daily logistics problem with a pushchair and the reason hotels split between the hilltop and the bay. The second catch is that Għadira is the island's default beach, so through July and August it, its car park and the coast road behind it all fill by mid-morning.

Why Mellieħa works with children

  • The largest sandy beach in the country

Għadira shelves gently enough for young children to stand a long way out, and Golden Bay is ten minutes away.

  • Resort hotels built around children

Malta's largest family hotels are here, with pools, children's clubs in season and family rooms as standard.

  • The jumping-off point for Gozo and Comino

Ċirkewwa, at the end of the peninsula, has the Gozo car ferry and the boats to Comino's bays.

  • Ridges and coast paths above the bays

The Red Tower and Marfa Ridge look over both bays and the Gozo channel, on short walks rather than hikes.

Where to stay

Best areas in Mellieħa for families

4 areas cover most trips here; the difference is mainly beach-first families versus cheaper apartments ten minutes south.
  • Mellieħa Bay (Għadira)

    Best for beach-first families

A handful of large hotels directly behind the biggest stretch of sand in Malta, so a beach day needs no transport. The coast road runs between the hotels and the beach and is busy in summer.

  • Mellieħa village

Best for families who want shops and restaurants on foot

The hilltop village has bakeries, supermarkets, restaurants and the bus stops, plus cheaper apartments. The walk down to the beach is ten minutes and the walk back up is the part to plan for.

  • Ċirkewwa & Marfa

Best for families with a car doing gozo and comino

The far tip of the peninsula, beside the ferry terminal and the Comino boats, with small sandy coves nearby. There is almost nothing within walking distance otherwise.

  • St Paul's Bay & Xemxija

Best for cheaper apartments ten minutes south

A long, built-up bay with more self-catering supply and better bus links towards Valletta, but swimming is off rock and concrete rather than sand.

Family hotel picks in Mellieħa

  • Mellieħa Bay — large resort hotels behind the sand
    Għadira / Mellieħa BayMid-range

Mellieħa Bay — large resort hotels behind the sand

Being level with the beach rather than on the hill above it is the whole argument: the country's largest stretch of shallow sand is a walk across the road, which removes the daily climb that defines staying in the village.

    • Walking distance to the largest sandy beach in Malta
    • Pools with children's sections and slides
    • Children's clubs and evening entertainment in season
    • Half-board and all-inclusive options as well as room-only

    Fitting a family in

Family rooms sleeping four are the standard product and interconnecting doubles are common; confirm whether a sofa bed is included in the stated occupancy.

Watch out. The coast road passes between the hotels and the beach, and both fill from mid-morning in July and August. Some properties marketed as Mellieħa Bay actually sit up the hill and rely on a shuttle, so check the map rather than the name, and compare what each all-inclusive package covers.

  • Mellieħa village — apartments and aparthotels on the hilltop

Mellieħa village — apartments and aparthotels on the hilltop

Cheaper than the bay hotels, with a kitchen and with bakeries, supermarkets, restaurants and the bus stops on the doorstep, which suits families who cook some meals and want a village rather than a resort.

    • Kitchens and washing machines
    • Shops, bakeries and restaurants within a few streets
    • Bus stops for the coast road and the Gozo ferry
    • Quieter at night than the seafront strips further south

    Fitting a family in

Two-bedroom apartments sleep four to five comfortably and are among the better value on the island.

Watch out. The village sits on top of a steep hill above the beach. Ten minutes down is easy; the climb back with tired children and beach bags is the reason families start taking taxis. Confirm whether the property runs a beach shuttle.

  • North Malta — farmhouses with a private pool
    Manikata / Selmun / XemxijaMid-range

North Malta — farmhouses with a private pool

A private pool takes the pressure off the beach in the one part of Malta where the beaches are busiest, and puts Golden Bay, Għadira and the Gozo ferry all within fifteen minutes by road.

    • Private pool and outdoor space
    • Full kitchen and washing machine
    • Three or more bedrooms for larger or shared groups
    • Golden Bay and Għadira both within a short drive

    Fitting a family in

Three- and four-bedroom stone conversions sleeping six to eight, usually arranged around a courtyard.

Watch out. A car is required: these sit on rural lanes with no useful bus service and often no shop within walking distance. Pools are unheated and normally unfenced, and the stone stairs inside are steep.

Things to do in Mellieħa with kids

  • Mellieħa Bay (Għadira)

    Mellieħa Bay (Għadira)

    Mellieħa

The largest sandy beach in Malta, a long shallow bay where the water stays standing-depth a long way out, with water-sports operators, kiosks and sunbed hire along it and a bird reserve behind.

Good to know. Being the island's default beach makes it the busiest: the car park and the coast-road lay-bys fill by mid-morning through July and August. There is almost no natural shade, so an umbrella is not optional, and the coast road runs directly behind the sand.

  • Comino and the Blue Lagoon
    WaterBook ahead

    Comino and the Blue Lagoon

    Mellieħa

Boat trips from Ċirkewwa and Marfa to the channel between Malta and Gozo, where a shallow sand-bottomed strait between Comino and Cominotto gives unusually clear turquoise water. Most operators also pass the caves and the smaller bays.

Good to know. Heavily oversold. The colour is real, but the lagoon is small and takes several hundred people at once in July and August, onto a narrow strip of sand with limited shade and limited toilets. The earliest and latest boats, or Comino's other bays, change the day completely — and crossings are cancelled in strong wind.

    Popeye Village

    Mellieħa

The timber film set built at Anchor Bay in 1979 for a live-action Popeye film, kept as a family attraction with pools, boat rides, shows and a small funfair among the original buildings.

Good to know. The site is a steep, stepped hillside above a cove, so it is hard work with a pushchair and unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility. The appeal falls off sharply above about ten, and much of the water and show programme runs only through the summer season.

  • Golden Bay
    Water

    Golden Bay

    Mellieħa

A sheltered crescent of fine sand between headlands ten minutes west of Mellieħa, one of the few genuinely sandy beaches on Malta, with sunbeds, water sports and a kiosk in season.

Good to know. The beach sits below a cliff, so the way down from the upper car park is a long flight of steps — a real obstacle with a pushchair or a cool box. Parking fills early in summer, and the bay faces north-west, so it can be choppy with an onshore swell on days when Għadira is flat.

Getting around Mellieħa

Buses run along the coast road south towards Sliema and Valletta and north to the Ċirkewwa ferry, on a flat fare, but the Valletta run takes well over an hour and is standing-room through the summer. The Tallinja Explore card makes sense for a bus-led week and is wasted alongside a hire car. Most large hotels run a shuttle between the hilltop and the bay, which is worth confirming before booking a room up the hill. A car matters most for Golden Bay, the Gozo ferry queue and the beaches beyond Marfa; against it, the Għadira car park and the lay-bys along the coast road are full by mid-morning in high summer.

Mellieħa tips for families

  • With kids

Plan around the hill, not the distance

The village and the beach are barely a kilometre apart, but the road between them is a sustained climb. Downhill with beach bags is fine; uphill at the end of the day with tired children is what makes families start paying for taxis on day two. Either book at the bay, or confirm the hotel shuttle exists.

  • When to go

Għadira fills by mid-morning in high summer

As the island's default sandy beach it absorbs day-trippers from everywhere else. In July and August the car park, the coast-road lay-bys and the better half of the sand are all taken well before lunch. Arriving early or going late are both better than arriving at noon.

  • With kids

The Blue Lagoon is heavily oversold

The water on Comino genuinely is that colour, but the lagoon is small and in July and August it takes several hundred people at once onto a narrow strip of sand, with limited shade and limited toilets. The earliest and latest boats, the shoulder months, or one of Comino's other bays are the difference between a good day and a crowded one. Crossings are cancelled in strong wind.

  • Getting around

A car opens up the north, then sits still

Golden Bay, the Red Tower, Marfa Ridge and the Ċirkewwa ferry are all within fifteen minutes by road and awkward by bus. A car for two or three days covers them; a week of it mostly pays for parking.

Mellieħa with kids: common questions

Is Mellieħa the best place to stay in Malta with young children?
For a beach-led trip, yes — it is the only base with a large sandy beach within reach on foot, and the biggest family hotels are here. For sightseeing it is the weaker choice, because the bus into Valletta takes well over an hour.
Is Mellieħa Bay good for toddlers?
It is the shallowest, sandiest beach in the country, which is exactly what a toddler needs. The qualifications are that there is no natural shade, the coast road runs directly behind the sand, and it is very busy from mid-morning in July and August.
Is the Blue Lagoon worth it with children?
On an early or late boat, or outside July and August, yes. At midday in high summer it is extremely crowded for a very small area of sand, with limited shade and facilities. Comino's quieter bays are an alternative on the same trip.
How far is Mellieħa from Malta airport?
Around 45 minutes by road, and the longest airport transfer of any Maltese base. By bus it involves a change and takes considerably longer.
Do you need a car in Mellieħa?
Not for a hotel-and-beach week, since Għadira is walkable from the bay hotels and buses run along the coast. A car earns its cost for Golden Bay, the Gozo ferry and the beaches beyond Marfa, which are all awkward by bus.
